Plans reviewed for high school entry renovation

During Thursday evening’s St. Marys Area School District school board workshop, plans were reviewed for renovations to the front entryway of the high school.
Jerry Bankovich of KTH Architects provided details on several options for the project. He had previously met with Superintendent Ann Kearney and Cindy FinGado, business manager, on several occasions to discuss the project.

Funding extension for senior center approved

Due to several funding inadequacies due to unfavorable economic times, county commissioners voted Wednesday to redirect allocated monies for the continuation of a project for Bennetts Valley Senior Center.

Lady Crusaders advance in D9-A volleyball tourney

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders volleyball team kept their record clean on Thursday evening, defeating the Otto-Eldred Lady Terrors by a 3-1 score in the quarterfinals of the District 9-A Volleyball Tournament. The Lady Crusaders ran their slate to 14-0 on the season as they defeated the Lady Terrors 25-14, 23-25, 25-14 and 25-14 in a match held at the Aaron J. Straub Gym on the Elk Catholic campus.

Karns City edges Lady Crusaders 1-0 for 9-A title

DuBOIS - The Karns City Lady Gremlins edged the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders by a 1-0 score Thursday night at the DuBois Area High School field for the District 9 Class A championship.
Karns City will now take on the third-place team from District 7, either Springdale or Greensburg Central Catholic, on Tuesday, Nov. 9, at a site and time to be announced.
Last night’s contest saw the two teams battle to a 0-0 tie at the half.

Supervisors approve stormwater, meeting ordinances

The Fox Township Supervisors approved a motion to amend their existing Stormwater Management ordinance to include the recently enacted plan from the county.
Elk County enacted a new Stormwater Management Plan, which was approved by the Department of Environmental Protection, on Sept. 16. All Elk County municipalities must now adopt or amend their existing stormwater ordinances to comply with the county’s plan.
Supervisor Dave Mattiuz introduced a motion which requires all township boards, authorities and committees to hold their meetings and workshops on township property.

Range of area elk herd expanding

Pennsylvania's elk herd currently numbers over 700 animals spread out across a 3,750 square mile range; however, many people base what they know about the elk on the small percentage of the herd that inhabits the area immediately around Benezette.
Given how used to people the elk around Benezette appear, it is difficult for some people to understand how the concept of an elk hunt can be challenging.

City opens meetings on 2011 budget

Members of city council held their first of three scheduled meetings regarding the 2011 city budget yesterday evening and plan to meet again tonight.
According to city manager Dave Greene, the currently proposed tax increase is about three and a half mills, though he noted that no figures have been agreed upon by council. He added that council members are currently trying to make concessions in the budget so that only a lesser increase would be required.
Carol Muhitch, city finance director, explained that each mill is worth about $208,000.

He was born Aug. 14, 1936 in St. Marys, son of the late George and Margaret (Hirschberger) Herzing.

Catherine (Kate) Burden Maille

Catherine (Kate) Burden Maille, 80, of Erie, died at home on Friday, Oct. 29, 2010.
She was born June 26, 1930 in St. Marys, the daughter of the late Alvin and Eleanor Dunn Burden.
In 1958, she married David Frank Maille, who preceded her in death in 1975.

Donna (Dean) Lerch, 68, of Brockway, died on Wednesday, Oct, 30, 2010 following a lengthy illness.
She was born on March 29, 1942 in DuBois, the daughter of the late Donald and Ruth (Davis) Dean.
