Lady Crusaders advance with 3-2 nine-inning win

For the third consecutive game, the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader softball team has used a walk-off to keep them on the road to State College.
Thursday afternoon at Brockway High School, a single by Sophie Viglione in the bottom of the ninth scored Jessica Tettis from third base to give Elk Catholic a 3-2 win over District 6 champ West Branch.

St. Marys Legion walks off 10-0 over Smethport

The St. Marys American Legion Post 103 squad extended their win streak to five games on Thursday night as they walked off 10-0 in five innings against Smethport under the lights at Berwind Park. The win was especially meaningful to the Post 103 squad because Smethport had handed them their only defeat so far in their season opener.

SMAHS celebrates Class of 2015 graduates

Thursday evening marked the culmination of the high school career of the St. Marys Area High School Class of 2015.
Seniors and their family and friends gathered inside the SMAHS Carpin Auditorium for the school's 119th annual commencement program.
Lauren McAnany acted as the Mistress of Ceremonies as she introduced the evening's student speakers, class President Zachary Whelpley, Salutatorian Angela Frey and Valedictorian Samantha Candalor.

Summer pilot program focuses on math skills

This summer the St. Marys Public Library is focused on more than just promoting reading and is promoting a math pilot program called "Summer of Numbers: A Math Program for Families."

Ambulance donates pediatric backboard to pool

The St. Marys Area Ambulance Service recently donated a pediatric backboard to the St. Marys Community Pool. While the pool already has backboards that can be used on adults, the addition of this backboard will aid the facility's staff in providing the best care possible to young patrons in the event of an emergency.

Dollar General proposed for Fox Township

KERSEY – A Dollar General store will reportedly soon be constructed in the Kersey flats area of Fox Township, situated off of state route 948, with a projected opening of the end of summer or early fall.
The Fox Township zoning hearing board recently granted the store developer a dimensional variance for size allowance to construct a store larger than permitted by township ordinance.
The 9,100 square foot store is slated to be located to the right of the former Centerville Grille restaurant on a nearly two-acre parcel.

Paving project gets go-ahead

In an effort to budget for this summer's paving project, Fox Township Supervisor and Roadmaster Randy Gradizzi said they have opted to cut out the 4-ft. widening of a road where catch basins were recently installed.
This move frees up funding in the township's road crew budget to accept the lowest paving bid of $214,943.75 from G.O. Hawbaker.
The township had budgeted $189,025 for paving, resulting in a difference of over $25,000 when compared to the lowest bid.

Tie, intrigue in primary election

RIDGWAY – Two Republican candidates for Highland Township supervisors will draw lots Friday with the victor being placed on the November ballot.
GOP candidates Eugene Brown and Mike Detsch are tied with 24 votes each following the May 19 primary.
The drawing of the lots, held Friday in Conference Room No. 1 in the Elk County Courthouse Annex at noon, will see both candidates draw lots; whomever draws a "1" will break the tie and receive the nomination.
That candidate will battle Democrat Lloyd Hulings in the general election in November.

Superheroes in training wanted for kickoff event

The St. Marys Public Library has put out a call looking for all young superheroes in training.
For the kickoff of this year's Summer Reading Program, youngsters are invited to stop by the library Wednesday, June 10 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. to try out their "super powers" at a number of stations that will be set up in the library's downstairs meeting room.
