Holiday Tournament again supporting Coaches vs. Cancer

Donations for the Coaches vs. Cancer program will once again be collected during the annual varsity basketball Elk County Holiday Tournament, which is scheduled to be held this year on Wednesday, Dec. 29 and Thursday, Dec. 30 at St. Marys Area High School. The tournament is held between the varsity girls' and boys' basketball teams from St. Marys Area High School, Elk County Catholic High School, Johnsonburg Area High School and Ridgway Area High School.

Students reach goal in Heifer International Project

Students at St. Marys Catholic Middle School succeeded in raising an amount above their anticipated goal during their unique fundraiser to purchase farm animals for needy families.
During their recent two-week long fundraiser as part of the Heifer International Project, students donated leftover change in cans located throughout the school. They could also contribute by paying $1 to participate in a dress-down day. There were also several donations from the community.
"People were really generous," said Student Council President Madison Stoltz. "We were surprised at the final amount."

Gradizzi discusses tentative CDBG projects

Earlier this week, members of city council gave their approval to tentative projects for the city's 2011 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding.
Community and Economic Development Coordinator Tina Gradizzi explained to council that two projects presented at the first public hearing earlier this month qualify for the funding. These projects entail administration costs and street and road improvements within the city.

Chamber ornament features Elk Country Visitors Center

This holiday season the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce's annual Christmas ornament features the Elk Country Visitors Center.
"We felt it was appropriate to feature the visitors center, as it has been a huge attraction to our area," said Sally Wilson, Chamber executive director.
As part of the 25th anniversary of the Christmas ornament program, the Chamber is offering two different designs.
The first design is an ivory ornament with a color photo of the visitors center with "Elk Country Visitor Center" written in ivory script.

Refurbishment of St. Leo Catholic Church on schedule

The refurbishment of the St. Leo Catholic Church began earlier this month and is off to a good start, according to Father Brian Vossler.
“The progress for our refurbishing has gone very well so far,” Vossler said. “At first, we got off to a slow start because we were waiting for a company from North Carolina to come and pick up our pews. They were delayed by about a week and a half, but we did some planning and did some work out in the gathering space so it wasn't completely wasted time, and once we got all of the contractors on board it's been going very smoothly.”

VFW donates Taser to sheriff's office

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 5887 presented a check to the Elk County Sheriff's Office for the purchase of a Taser gun.
The $900 check was presented by VFW 5887 Post Commander Ricky Hicks to Elk County Sheriff Jeffrey Krieg and deputies Patrick Straub and William Gerg Jr.
“It is a less-than-lethal weapon that we like to use for trouble in a courtroom and things like that,” said Krieg. “By using it, we don't incur the liability like you do when you have to shoot somebody.
“It's mainly for my deputies to use in those situations and this will give us two now for the department.”

Big Buck Contest winner

Joe Dellaquila, 32, of Ridgway, was announced as the winner of the 6th annual Big Buck Contest during Wednesday night's contest wrap-up festivities at the Johnsonburg Fire Hall. Dellaquila bagged a 14-point, 180-lb. buck during archery season. A special Big Buck edition will appear in the Tuesday, Dec. 28 issue of The Daily Press, The Ridgway Record and The Kane Republican. Above, Dellaquila is shown with some of the $5,000 in prizes he won as part of the contest.

Fullington bus service resumes in St. Marys

Fullington Bus Service has recently returned to St. Marys after being discontinued for a year.
"The bus went through St. Marys for more than 20 years," said Milt Wiseman, vice-president for Intercity Coach Services. "There was minimal ridership so we tried service through Brockway and Ridgway. Unfortunately, this ridership was very minimal also, so we are trying St. Marys again."

Supervisors plan to be more thorough regarding drilling

At their recent meeting, Jay Township supervisor Francis Gustafson explained that he and his fellow supervisors plan to take a more thorough approach to Marcellus gas drilling within the township, particularly with regard to what sort of hazardous materials are being used.

Council approves 2011 budget despite opposition

The 2011 budget for the City of St. Marys was approved by city council with a vote of 5-2 on Monday evening. Councilmen Sally Geyer and Dick Dornisch both voted in opposition, and the decision was not without some dissent from a few area residents as well.
During a public hearing held on the city's 2011 budget at the beginning of the city council meeting, a few residents addressed council about what they stated was an unfair increase in their property taxes.
