Kettle corn business beginning to pop

North Country Kettle Corn, based in Ridgway, has been growing one kernel at a time since Jaime and Diane Leitzel opened the business in the spring of 2009.
The couple came up with the idea of starting a business as a way to alleviate their empty nest syndrome.
They traveled to numerous events around the tri-state area in 2008, seeking out a potential new business venture, eventually deciding on kettle corn.

Library offers a variety of winter programs for young readers

The St. Marys Public Library has a number of programs and events scheduled over the course of the winter, many of which are geared toward encouraging younger children to read.
February will mark the third consecutive year that the library has collaborated with the Success by Six Program to collect books for children ages six and under.
According to Vicki Miller, the library's director of children's services, the purpose of the program is to get reading materials to preschool children so that they are introduced to books before they begin school.

Steelers to honor local Purple Heart recipient at game

A capacity home crowd will be cheering Saturday at Heinz Field as the Pittsburgh Steelers host the Baltimore Ravens in a pro football playoff game.
But before the action begins on the field, these same fans will be saluting several Purple Heart recipients-- including Leo "Jerry" Geibel of Kane-- in a pre-game ceremony at the stadium.
"It's a privilege to be part of the Purple Heart ceremony," Geibel said. "I want to thank the Steelers, who made it possible."

Smith's Sport Store closes after 87 years

Smith's Sport Store officially closed its doors on Dec. 30, 2010 after 87 years of business in the St. Marys downtown area.
According to owner Jeff Buchheit, the biggest reason for the decision to close the business stemmed from people changing the way they spend their time.
"Hunting has changed dramatically over the course of the last 20 years, but it's been on a fast-paced changed in the last five," Buchheit said.

Swimmers reach out to four-legged friends

Members of the St. Marys Area High School Swim and Dive Teams put their teamwork to use during a recent collection drive for the Elk County Humane Society.
"We decided that as a team that we wanted to do something bigger than ourselves this year," said Megan Barber, girls' team co-captain.
The teams solicited donations prior to their Intersquad Meet on Dec. 17. The meet featured swimmers and divers from the high school, as well as junior high members of the Blue Tide team.

Board releases 2010 figures; prison generates over $120K

Through work-release fees and housing revenue, the Elk County Prison generated over $120,000 for 2010.
Speaking at a prison board meeting Tuesday morning, warden Gregory J. Gebauer indicated that total housing revenue for 2010 from housing out-of-county inmates was $64,250. Work-release fees collected for the year were $60,372.65.

School board discusses business items

During Monday evening's St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors meeting, a variety of items were approved regarding several aspects of the district.
Resident Marilyn Secco questioned the board as to why the National Anthem is not played during junior high and elementary sporting events.
Secco said school board member Bob Luchini informed her that it was school board policy.
Secco added that she believes having the National Anthem played at all grade level sporting events will provide a learning opportunity for the students as well.
