December 6th
RIDGWAY - Officials discussed the intricacies of two prison policies Tuesday morning during a lengthy meeting of the Elk County Prison Board.
Board members highlighted an existing policy regarding work release and school release inmates, and also discussed a policy regarding the detainment of inmates on civil and criminal bench warrants issued by a Court of Common Pleas judge.
December 5th
On Monday evening, St. Marys City Council approved changes to the parking ordinance which were discussed during a previous workshop.
There will now be 24-hour parking allowed in all public parking lots, whether metered, unmetered, permitted or non-permitted. The Depot Street Parking Garage will be regulated by permit parking and a pay-to-park machine, with rates set by Council.
December 4th
Santa Claus will be making a special trip to Elk County on Dec. 17. He and Mrs. Claus are set to arrive that morning in a Pennsylvania State Police cruiser and travel to locations in St. Marys, Johnsonburg and Ridgway to hand out toys to area youth through Project Gifts for Elk County.
According to Project Gifts president Bob Roberts, the toy distribution this year will be held at Project Gifts for Elk County on Depot Street in St. Marys, the Johnsonburg Municipal Building, and the Ridgway High School.
KANE - Now the family knows the whole story.
Relatives of Army Cpl. Ralph E. “Dutch” Bradybaugh of Kane knew this soldier was killed in action during the “Battle of the Bulge” in Bastogne, Belgium on Jan. 3, 1945—just four months before Germany surrendered to end World War II.
What they didn’t know until 66 years later is that Bradybaugh died as a hero by saving the life of his best friend and fellow soldier, Alfred M. Percival of Milan, Ohio.
This revelation surfaced last summer when Al Percival Jr. of Berlin Heights, Ohio made contact with Joan Bizzak of Kane. Bradybaugh was her uncle.
Local author John Schlimm has tapped a new market with his latest cookbook "The Tipsy Vegan", 75 Boozy Recipes to Turn Every Bite into Happy Hour, which showcases plant-based recipes using an array of wine, beer and vodka as key ingredients.
December 2nd
For the past 11 years, area students requiring specialized care due to a mental health diagnosis have been utilizing the Crossroads Partial Hospitalization day treatment program, which offers a combination of group, individual and/or family therapy, academic support and medication management.
Now situated inside their new facility located on the campus of Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys, the program serves students from seven area school districts ranging in age from 11-18 years old.
December 1st
ST. MARYS - The Crossroads Partial Hospitalization Program hosted an open house on Thursday afternoon where community members were invited to tour the program's new facility, which opened in July inside Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys.
Students at Elk County Catholic High School (ECCHS) recently created ECHO - an acronym for "Elk Catholic Helping Others" - as an umbrella title for all of the service projects that school members participate in throughout the year.
Fr. Ross Miceli, campus minister at ECCHS, explained that the creation of ECHO was deemed necessary because it served as a way to explain that Elk Catholic does a great deal more service outreach than that which falls into the category of campus ministry.

Penn State Football's annual Media Day took place Thursday beginning with Head Coach Bill O'Brien's inaugural press conference. O'Brien emphasized the need for the program, players and school to move forward in light of harsh NCAA sanctions imposed following the Jerry Sandusky scandal. He stated the need for the continued leadership of the seniors while noting the talent of several underclassman players.")
