Rainy weather on Saturday did not deter youngsters at Sacred Heart from enjoying the parish's annual Easter egg hunt. The egg hunt was one of several scheduled to be held in the area. Due to the weather, the well-attended event was moved indoors, with age groups being directed to various locations throughout the Sacred Heart Activity Center. In addition to the candy found in their eggs, children also received additional goodies from the Easter Bunny, who made a special appearance at the event. The weather in St. Marys was cool, damp and gloomy on Saturday morning; however, this did little to dampen the spirits of around 500 individuals who participated in the inaugural Bunny Hop 5K run/walk. The event raised over $10,000 to benefit the Brain Aneurysm Foundation.
"[The amount of participants] was probably over double what we were expecting," said Taylor Frank, who coordinated the event along with her sister, Carly, and Rachael, Michael and Daniel Paladino, in honor of their mothers.
Members of the St. Marys Area School District Board of School Directors approved various items during their recent meeting.
Among them were the approval of Nathaniel J. Schmidt as the solicitor for the district for the 2011-2012 school year at a rate of $125 per hour.
The Jay Township Supervisors opened bids during their recent meeting for a paving project that will take place later this year along a portion of the Caledonia Road.
Bids were received from three different companies. According to the supervisors, bids were submitted in the amounts of $219,569.80 from Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc.; $187,168 from HRI, Inc.; and $191,827.80 from New Enterprise. The supervisors unanimously approved awarding the bid to HRI, which was the lowest responsible bidder.
"Who's under your carbon footprint?"
This question was recently posed to the 87 members of the senior class at Elk County Catholic High School as they studied environmental stewardship and learned about how the impact they have on the environment affects others around the world. The discussions have taken place in the students' theology class, which is taught by Fr. Ross Miceli.
Approximately 60 agencies will be on hand between 1-6 p.m. on Monday as part of Family Day 2011, being held once again at the St. Marys Area High School.
Now in its seventh year, Family Day is aimed at promoting health and wellness for the entire family, from newborns to the elderly and everyone in between.
The idea that a few simple actions can make a big difference is proven in the results of an ink cartridge and cellphone recycling program that began years ago in the St. Marys Catholic elementary schools. Now in its 10th year, the program has brought in more than $23,000 for technology supplies and equipment to benefit the newly incorporated Elk County Catholic School System (ECCSS).
The nearly 27,000 people who ran in Monday's Boston Marathon were doing so for a variety of reasons. For Hollywood, Pa. resident Joe Guilyard, it was about health, gratitude and the inspiration of the people who helped get him there.
"It's like you're in the SuperBowl, and I was a player. It was fantastic," Guilyard said. "The crowd was screaming from one end to the other. It was the thrill of a lifetime.
"Everybody there was living their dream. They were getting to run in the Boston Marathon."
The Jay Township Supervisors voted to "opt in" to administering and enforcing the state's Uniform Construction Code (UCC) during their monthly meeting on Thursday evening. Each municipality has the option of either "opting in" or "opting out" of administering and enforcing the building code and the township had previously "opted out."
A significant crowd was on hand Wednesday morning as St. Marys' newest retailer, Shoe Sensation, opened its doors to eager customers.
In celebrating the grand opening, several store employees and corporate personnel were on hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Numerous representatives from the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce welcomed store personnel to the area and hosted the ceremony.
