Commissioners support initiative

Elk County Commissioners Wednesday morning announced their unwavering support for the creation of an educational center at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
"We endorse that project, the need for an educational center at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial," said Elk County Commissioner Ronald T. Beimel. "The Wall is the most visited memorial in our nation's capital and there are 3,146 soldiers from Pennsylvania who proudly gave their lives and service to our country during Vietnam.

Thursday's Charity Pub Crawl featuring master magician

The Station Inn, located on the Million Dollar Highway, is the fourth stop of the Straub Brewery Charity Pub Crawl taking place tonight at 8 p.m.
There is no admission or coverage charge to attend the fundraising event, which benefits the Rotary Club of St. Marys, Crystal Fire Department, Elk County Relay for Life and the Elk County Humane Society.
The featured entertainment for this month's event is Master Magician Michaelangelo, otherwise known as Pennsylvania resident Mike Gigliotti of Punxsutawney. He will begin performing at 8:30 p.m.

Council approves wording for ordinance amendment

City Zoning Officer Matt Pfeufer addressed members of St. Marys City Council earlier this week to inform them that the St. Marys Planning Commission had revised its draft of a zoning ordinance amendment regarding oil and gas development. Council members gave their approval to the revised draft of the ordinance.
Council members had expressed concern over the previous draft because it had required individuals to have access to a minimum of 10 acres of land in order to pursue oil or gas drilling.

Municipal authority reaches sales agreement with drilling company

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Municipal Authority reached a sales agreement to sell water to Hunt Marcellus, LLC, headquartered in Dallas, Texas.
During Tuesday evening's regular municipal authority meeting, authority members voted unanimously to sell their water at a rate of $8 per 1,000 gallons.
Authority members discussed the issue during executive session.

County, municipal candidates win nominations

May 18, 2011

With all 33 precincts reporting, the three incumbent Elk County commissioners won party nominations Tuesday in the primary election.
June H. Sorg led Democratic voting with 2,549 votes. Fellow Democrat, Commissioner Ronald T. Beimel, followed with 2,146 votes. Lyle Garner was left out of the mix with 940 votes, as was Dave Sallack with 755 votes. There were 271 write-in votes cast.
Incumbent commissioner Daniel R. Freeburg led Republican voting with 1,636 votes. Freeburg will be accompanied on the ballot by Janis E. Kemmer, a second-term jury commissioner, with 1,270 votes.
