CAPSEA faces major budget cut

May 27, 2011

The budget proposed by the state House of Representatives would cut 10 percent of critical funding for services to victims of abuse and rape, forcing nonprofit organizations like CAPSEA, Inc. [Citizens Against Physical, Sexual & Emotional Abuse] to make serious cutbacks, according to CAPSEA Executive Director Billie Jo Weyant.
CAPSEA also provides legal assistance for people living in poverty to address such needs as home foreclosures, disability benefits, and homeless assistance.
According to Weyant this cut would revert the organization back to its 1998 budget level.

Paint and pesticides collection to start June 1

May 27, 2011

A regular collection for paint and pesticides will once again get under way this year, starting Wednesday from 12 to 5 p.m. at the Stackpole Complex in St. Marys. Area residents utilizing the collection are asked to first stop at the Community Recycling Center to inform volunteers that they have material to drop off.
Elk County Recycling/Solid Waste Coordinator Bekki Titchner explained that this is necessary because, for the time being, paint and pesticides will still need to be dropped off near the electronics recycling location, which is where the material was collected last year.
