As part of its ongoing scholarship program, the Elk County Community Foundation (ECCF) awarded a total of 83 scholarships to local students this year totaling $77,225.
Of those scholarships, 20 were awarded to seniors from St. Marys Area High School, 19 from Ridgway Area High School, 17 from Elk County Catholic High School, 12 from Johnsonburg Area High School, six from DuBois Area High School, four from Brockway Area High School and two from Kane Area High School.
Four members of the 2011 graduating class of Leadership Elk County (LEC) made a special presentation to members of the St. Marys City Council on Monday evening to highlight ways in which blighted areas of St. Marys could be transformed to become more viable. The LEC group consisted of Kim Kerchinski of St. Marys, Amy Shields of St. Marys, Shelly Meier of St. Marys and Amy Goode of Ridgway, who indicated that they had given the same presentation to their fellow LEC classmates a few weeks ago.
With a state budget possibly being in place by July 1, officials at the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission (NCPRPDC) are preparing for new times.

County officials announced Tuesday that a local veterans' task force has been initiated to help bridge gaps between various groups dedicated to the assistance and advancement of the county's veterans.
"I hope to see the new task force work with the various veterans groups concerning different veterans' issues," said Elk County Commissioner Ronald T. Beimel. "We'll be meeting at least once a month with the Rides 4 Vets program, a great organization, and we're happy to forge together with them to see what kind of improvements can be made."
