Ken VanGiesen never had any regrets about his decision to join the Pennsylvania Army National Guard after graduating from Kane Area High School in 1999.
"If I had it to do over again, I still would do it," VanGiesen told The Kane Republican in 2005 before the first of his two deployments in Iraq. "I'm proud to be able to do it."
This brave and loyal American lost his life Monday while serving with a National Guard unit in Afghanistan.
The St. Marys facility of Mersen USA celebrated a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday morning to commemorate its new cold isostatic press (CIP), believed to be the largest of its kind in the world.
Various city and state officials, industry personnel from the U.S. and abroad, and invited guests and Mersen employees were on hand for the event.

ST. MARYS - Connor McKenzie Rohrback, 18, of 200 Neubert St., St. Marys, was held to court on third-degree misdemeanor charges of defiant trespass-posted on school grounds and disorderly conduct-hazardous/physically offensive condition following a preliminary hearing and arraignment at District Judge Donald Wilhelm's office on Tuesday afternoon.
Wilhelm set standard bail at $1,000, which was posted by Rohrback. A formal arraignment was scheduled for Sept. 6 at 3 p.m. at the Elk County Courthouse.
Officials from the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission [NCPRPDC] attended Tuesday morning's Elk County Board of Commissioners meeting to again reiterate the fact that the sale of the Industrial Technology Education Center [ITEC] to the county features no spending of county tax dollars of any kind.
"When ITEC was built in 1997 or 1998, a bond issue was taken out," said Jim Chorney, director of finances for the commission. "The bond issue was backed by Jefferson and Elk counties.

Officials working in the Elk County Sheriff's Office will soon have an easier time thanks to the addition of state-of-the-art software.
Commissioners signed an agreement Tuesday morning with Teleosoft, Inc. for improvements to the sheriff's office totaling $18,900.
"I extend my appreciation to the commissioners for the approval of this contract," said Elk County Sheriff Jeffrey C. Krieg. "We're replacing software in our office that is actually DOS-based, pretty much nearly 28 years old.
