MT. JEWETT -- The Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts (PACD) has presented State Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati (R-Brockway) with the 2011 Legislator Recognition Award.
According to the PACD, the award is going to Scarnati for his â€śenvironmental foresight and advocacy.â€ť
Kerry Fetter of Smethport, chairman of the McKean County Conservation District, presented the award to Scarnati last week at the Kinzua Bridge State Park near Mt. Jewett. Scarnati came to the park to participate in the ceremony to mark the opening of the new Skywalk pedestrian walkway.
St. Marys City Council recently approved publishling an ordinance which reduces the speed limit on South St. Marys Street, also referred to as the Million Dollar Highway/state Route 255, from the existing 35 miles per hour to 25 miles per hour.
The ordinance states the change is due to council's desire to provide for the safety of its residents. The lower speed limit encompasses the area of South St. Marys Street from Railroad Street in downtown St. Marys, to Vine Road.
In speaking to those assembled at Thursday's meeting of the Elk County Gas Task Force at the St. Marys Area Middle School, speakers Professor Ross Pifer of the Penn State Dickinson School of Law and attorney Tom Wagner of Meyer and Wagner in St. Marys discussed resources and legal precedents surrounding the possibility of water contamination as a result of Marcellus Shale drilling.
