Fox budget workshop, road and fencing projects approved

The Fox Township supervisors have scheduled their annual budget workshops for Oct. 22, Oct. 29 and Nov. 5 at 4:30 p.m. The adoption of the proposed budget is set for Nov. 7, with the final budget being adopted on Dec. 5, 2012.
Under new business the Fox Township supervisors approved the use of the township backhoe and service truck to conduct repairs at the Fox Twp. Sportsmen's Club shooting range, as well as using a boom mower to mow the hillside.

Most Rev. Lawrence T. Persico ordained as 10th Bishop of Erie

Live television coverage of the ordination of Bishop Lawrence Thomas Persico revealed a humanity that is already endearing him to the northwest Pennsylvania flock he will now shepherd.  It was all part of a joyous day on which the 10th man in the 159-year history of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Erie became its new bishop.

St. Marys woman pleads guilty to mail fraud, tax evasion in federal court Friday

ERIE - A St. Marys woman, Sandra Prechtel, charged with embezzling nearly a million dollars from her employer, Abbott Furnace Company, entered a guilty plea to charges of mail fraud and tax evasion on Friday before a U.S. District Court Judge in Erie.

K9 Karnival taking place today

Now in its 11th year, the annual K-9 Karnival Walk 'n Wag, sponsored by the Elk County Humane Society, is taking place this afternoon at Benzinger Park in St. Marys beginning at 11 a.m. There will be games, prizes and more.
Aggressive dogs and female canines in heat are discouraged from attending.

If you see this caterpillar, look but don't touch

This fuzzy little caterpillar may look cute, but the hairs on its body can cause a burning, stinging sensation and rash when touched, so specimens of this kind should be avoided. Known as the white hickory Tussock moth caterpillar, the insect may be found in the area; this one was at Veolia Greentree Landfill in Fox Township, Elk County. Photo by Victoria Stanish.

SMASD superintendent discusses ongoing difficulties with cyber school

ST. MARYS - With debate over the virtues of cyber and charter schools reaching a fevered pitch in political and educational forums across the nation, Thursday's meeting of the St. Marys Area School Board included an impassioned articulation by superintendent Ann Kearney of the impact of cyber schools have had on districts like hers and measures being considered to "stem the flow of students dropping out of the district" to attend cyber schools.

Powdered metal training center opens it doors in St. Marys

The new TAT Technology Development and Training (TDT) Center in St. Marys recently opened its doors in the former Stackpole Complex with hopes of offering a variety of hands-on courses designed to continually improve the industry.
TAT Technologies President Harb Nayar, PhD, based in Summit, N.J., chose to open the facility in St. Marys because of the area's strong powdered metal (PM) industry.

Son charged with setting fire to father's house

ST. MARYS - A 25-year-old St. Marys man has been charged with arson and other felony charges related to a fire at the 137 Lynch Rd. home of his father and stepmother that occurred in the early-morning hours of July 14.

Supervisors approve purchase of new rescue truck

The Fox Township Volunteer Fire Department is hoping to debut their new rescue truck during the township's bicentennial next summer if plans go accordingly following the Fox Township Supervisors' unanimous approval for the purchase of the truck during their regular monthly meeting Wednesday evening.
According to Fox Twp. Fire Chief Scott Surra, the new apparatus costs $628,335.21.
"Basically we designed the whole thing," Surra said referring to the department's 7- or 8-member truck committee, which met with the truck builder last week to finalize plans.
