Democrat Casey re-elected to U.S. Senate

November 6, 2012

Democratic U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, 52, of Scranton, was re-elected for a second term, defeating Republican Tom Smith. Casey's victory also cements a seat that Democrats had counted on in the struggle for control of the U.S. Senate.

Voters go to the polls

Business was brisk at the UE Local 502 union hall along SR 120 in St. Marys Tuesday afternoon as many voters were stopping by after work, including Kristen, shown above. However, a poll worker inside said turnout was not as high as expected and estimated that maybe a little more than half of that precinct's registered voters would come out to cast their ballot. Election Day in Elk County

It's been a sunny, yet cool, day in Elk County and the hope is that the nice weather will encourage more voters to travel to the polls for today's general election. The county only had a 20.52 percent voter turnout in the primary election in April, with 4,141 out of 20,179 registered voters casting ballots. While there are 10,714 registered Democrats in the county compared to 7,436 registered Republicans, in the April election only 19.40 percent of Democrats voted compared to 27.73 percent of Republicans.

11 elk processed at check station through Monday afternoon

KARTHAUS – The 2012 week-long elk season got under way Monday and 11 elk-- three bulls and eight cows-- had been brought to the elk check station located at the Pennsylvania Game Commission's maintenance building in Quehanna, Clearfield County, by 3:30 p.m. Monday afternoon.

Rides for Vets fundraiser offers a way to honor a veteran

The annual holiday to remember veterans is quickly approaching and the Rides for Vets program in Elk and Cameron counties is offering a way to honor the veteran(s) in your life.
"We were looking for a way to honor military service people on Veterans Day while giving loved ones a memento to hold on to after the fact," said Kellie Rusciolelli, Senior Volunteer Program Coordinator. "Elkwood Arts was the perfect place to request help in creating ornaments."
Once the wooden ornament is purchased it will then be displayed for all to see.

Equine Dice Run raises funds for Make-A-Wish

Organizers of the Equine Dice Run appreciate all of the participation from the riders and volunteers for their hard work in hosting the event, which took place at the St. Marys Campowners on Sept. 15 to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The event raised an amazing $7,216.22.

Area Catholic churches taking up collection for Sandy relief

Please be advised that in response to the many individuals and parishes who have been inquiring, Most Rev. Lawrence Persico, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Erie, has authorized parishes to take a collection to support disaster relief services related to Hurricane Sandy. Pastors are free to choose the Sunday on which they will hold the collection. Donations will then be sent to the Diocese of Erie for distribution to organizations providing help on the ground in the areas most in need of relief. One hundred percent of the money collected will be donated.

School board to meet in Bennetts Valley

A public meeting to discuss the possible demolition of the old portion of the Bennetts Valley Elementary School will be held on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. in the Bennetts Valley Elementary School gymnasium. The workshop meeting of the St. Marys Area Board of School Directors will be held Thursday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium. Items on the agenda include board procedures, general school affairs, business affairs, student activities, buildings and grounds, curriculum, transportation, personnel and any other matters that may come before the board.
