Starting today, the Elk County sheriff's department will be shut down until possibly the end of the calendar year as ordered by the county's board of commissioners.
As far as local historian Ray Beimel has been able to tell, December 8, 1842 was a bad weather day locally, making for a cold trip for the women and children who traveled from where they had been staying in a barn in Centerville to crude cabins that had been constructed by the male members of their small group in the area where South St. Marys Street Elementary School is located today.
RUSSELL CITY – Miraculously, no one was injured Friday morning when a box truck collided with a trailer hauling a crane on Route 66 just west of Russell City in Elk County.
The St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors voted Thursday to move forward with the planned demolition of an old, long unused portion of the Bennett's Valley Elementary School.
To usher in the Christmas season, live actors and animals will re-enact the Nativity for area residents.
The event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. each evening on Dec. 14, 15 and 16 at the First United Methodist Church Pavilion on South Michael Road, across from Hemlock and Teaberry roads.
A holiday tradition in the form of a Santa House has returned to St. Marys. This year the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce spearheaded a project to bring back a Santa House for area families to enjoy.
Youngsters can visit Santa each Saturday from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. through Dec. 15.
