Local teacher participates in exclusive program

Being able to touch Abraham Lincoln's Bible used during presidential inaugurations or reading an authentic journal of a Civil War soldier were just two things St. Marys Area Middle School teacher Cherri Gigliotti never imagined were possible until she attended the Library of Congress Summer Teachers Institute.
As part of the five-day institute held in Washington, D.C. throughout the summer, participants are permitted an all-access pass to the Library of Congress' vast archives.

Elk County Solid Waste Authority reorganizes

RIDGWAY - At Tuesday's meeting of the Elk County Solid Waste Authority, the authority reorganized for 2012. After the meeting began, the members immediately went into executive session to discuss personnel matters, with no official action taken.
Russ Braun was reappointed as chairman of the authority, Robin Dubler as vice-chair and John Moran as secretary. Jim DeVittorio will continue as the authority's solicitor.

Corbett visits Punxsutawney for Groundhog Day

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Despite being born in the Philadelphia area, Gov. Tom Corbett insists he is a western Pennsylvania man by heart who has observed Groundhog Day since he was a child.
"When I was young, we had only three TV stations, and one of them we couldn't get — not in North Hills," said Corbett, the second sitting Pennsylvania governor to attend Groundhog Day. "We always hope for more winter and snow so we could play outside."

Local logger adapts to a changing industry

While the logging industry has played a pivotal role in the Commonwealth's economic development and prosperity, with the housing market down and lumber prices falling local loggers like Shawn Sheeley of 4S Logging and Lumber, Inc. of Kersey have had to find additional ways of making ends meet.
The focus of Sheeley's business has shifted from lumber sales to more of the land-clearing services needed in a range of projects, from abandoned mine reclamation to natural gas well site construction.
