The City of St. Marys Shade Tree Commission began Arbor Day celebrations on Friday with a Tree City USA ceremony on Depot Street in downtown St. Marys.

During a recent East Branch Dam Safety Initiative meeting, residents and various agency personnel were notified about new updates to the project.
"We're considering for this project a community information system. We've done this at some of our other projects. It will be voluntary and will be a 9-1-1 type number, although it is not an emergency line," said Mike Rattay, project manager.
The system consists of an automated calling list which will contact people in the evening to announce public meetings, construction activities, road closures, and other events.
With summer drawing closer and vacation season along with it, law enforcement officials are asking the public to take simple precautions in safeguarding their home against burglary.
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, more than two billion burglaries occurred in the U.S. in 2009, with an estimated $4.6 billion in lost property. Of those, nearly three-fourths were residential, with the average dollar loss-per-burglary $2,096.
