Eckert new director of United Way

St. Marys Area United Way Executive Director Candace L. Eckert might be new to the job, but she has been raring to go from day one.
Eckert, who took the position in early April, has been spending time learning the ins and outs of the organization and has set a goal of making as many area residents aware of what the United Way does as possible.
"What I'm hoping to accomplish is to get the United Way out there again. I want to educate people on what the United Way is and what they offer to the community or give back to the community," Eckert said.

ERHC hosts luminary service 'honoring those who serve'

ST. MARYS - In honor of Memorial Day, a luminary service hosted by Elk Regional Health Center was held on Thursday night in recognition of individuals and organizations for their service to both community and country.
The evening began with a rendition of the "Star-Spangled Banner" sung by Betty Schogren, Rene Smith, and the Rev. Craig Duffield.
In welcoming those in attendance, Gregory P. Bauer, president and CEO of Elk Regional Health System, discussed the importance of recognizing the sacrifice of America's servicemen and women.

Residents should keep recycling in mind during weekend celebrations

Events such as cookouts, family reunions, and graduation parties make Memorial Day weekend a time of revelry for many area residents.
While recycling is not likely at the forefront of most people's minds during this time, individuals still should be cognizant some of the materials that can be recycled following their holiday gatherings.
"Not only should people think about what they can recycle, they should also consider what they can re-use to reduce what goes into the trash at the end of the day," said Bekki Titchner, Elk County recycling and solid waste coordinator.

Teachers' Olympic lessons culminate with annual games

In preparation for their annual Olympic games, teachers at South St. Marys Street Elementary School spend the entire year planning lessons and activities centered around the country they represent during the games.
The kindergarten classes represent the United States each year in order to learn about their home country.

RIDGWAY – At Tuesday's meeting of the Elk County Solid Waste Authority, Enforcement Officer Dave Stubber reported traveling 462 miles and working 152 hours between April 24 and May 19. He conducted three new investigations: one dumping on Bendigo Road and two incidents of failing to file a permit for demolition. One citation is expected, the other permit violation will be investigated by DEP and Stubber expects a successful prosecution in the dumping incident.
