Council approves police promotion policy

July 16, 2012

Members of the St. Marys City Council approved a resolution pertaining to procedures and promotions within the St. Marys Police Department.
City Manager Dave Greene explained that City Solicitor Tom Wagner met with St. Marys Police Chief Todd Caltagarone along with members of the Civil Service Commission, during which time the commission introduced procedures in determining which personnel are eligible for promotions. Such procedures were never before in place.

Tickets on sale today for Chamber Wing Fling

Beginning today at noon, tickets may be reserved for the 2012 St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce Wing Fling taking place Friday, Aug. 17 in downtown St. Marys.
Now in its 11th year, the Wing Fling has become a popular event attracting upwards of 500 attendees. Crowds gather in the Market Street area from 6-9:30 p.m., where they sample some of the area's tastiest wings and enjoy entertainment by a local band.
"The 2012 St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce Wing Fling looks to be the social event of the year for the local area," said Greg Stauffer, Wing Fling committee chairman.

Fundraiser proceeds will help bring smiles to children

The results of a recent fundraiser to benefit families who take their children to the Cleft-Craniofacial Center at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh-UPMC left the planners smiling, and will help bring smiles to more children in western Pennsylvania.
"An Afternoon of Smiles and Sunshine," held on May 20 at The Red Fern in St. Marys, brought in funds to help children with cleft palates and other craniofacial conditions and their families with travel expenses and other associated costs while getting treatment.

Early-morning St. Marys fire ruled arson

ST. MARYS - The Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal's Unit, St. Marys City Police, and the Crystal Fire Department report conducting an investigation into the origin and cause of a fire that occurred at approximately 4:20 a.m. on Saturday, July 14, 2012, at 137 Lynch Rd. in St. Marys. The fire has been ruled arson. Members of the Crystal Fire Dept. report being called out at at 4:24 a.m. that morning for a reported structure fire with flames showing at the Lynch Road address. Upon arrival, firemen found the structure fully involved in fire.

Community support makes library thrive

Throughout its history, the St. Marys Public Library has faced challenges that threaten its operation, but the unequivocal support of its patrons has allowed it to thrive and grow.
Despite state budget cuts that have made it difficult to plan and provide the desired level of service for patrons, the library continues to strive to offer the best. Like everybody else in tough economic times, the community institution has rolled up its sleeves and dug in to weather the storm.

Antique shop offers more than antiques

RIDGWAY - Just one week after opening its doors, Gallery 219 Antiques at 114 N. Broad St. in downtown Ridgway is already unlike many of the antique shops in the area.
The newly renovated space offers a wide variety of antiques and collectibles, ranging from items dating back to the turn of the century to classic Americana from the 1950s.
For store owner and St. Marys resident Stephen Bagley, antiquing, or "junking" as he likes to refer to it, runs in his blood.
