August 14th
At Monday's meeting of the St. Marys Area Board of School Directors, the board approved a number of new personnel items on the agenda.
All employment recommendations are provisional for 30 days pending receipt of Act 151 and Act 34 clearance documentation.
The following support personnel resignations were accepted:
August 13th
Monday's meeting of the St. Marys Area School District Board of Supervisors included further discussion of a measure designed to aid the district in collecting on outstanding cafeteria debts, which totaled $5,000 last year alone, by prohibiting students with delinquent lunch accounts from attending field trips.
While board members initially failed to reach a consensus on what amount of lunch debt would warrant revoking field trip privileges, it was decided at Monday's meeting that the amount would be tentatively set at $15.
EMPORIUM - The search continues for Thomas Edward Smith, 58, of Emporium, following his attempted kidnapping of a Citizens Bank Employee at gunpoint on Aug. 8 after an alleged dispute with the bank over a mortgage foreclosure. The Emporium Borough Police Department reports that at approximately 8:50 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 12, they and the Emporium-based Pa. State Police received reports that Thomas Edward Smith was sighted in the Goetz's Summit area of state Route 120 between Emporium and St. Marys.
The recently concluded âFit for PMâ class, designed to train candidates for entry-level positions in the powder metal industry, was a collaboration by several groups and is helping to fulfill area employment initiatives.
The powder metal industry is looking for dedicated entry-level employeesâand the eight graduates of the âFit for Powder Metal Programâ course that concluded last week have high hopes that they will fit the bill.

During a recent St. Marys City Council, meeting several board members discussed their comments on numerous topics.
With an eye on the upcoming school year, Thursday's workshop meeting of the SMASD Board of Directors included discussion of new developments within the district as the first day of the 2012 fall semester fast approaches.
Superintendent Ann Kearney announced that SMASD has received the Pennsylvania Department of Education's report which found "100 percent" of teachers in the district to be highly qualified and meeting the mandates for certified teachers in the previous school year.
For area residents looking to spruce up a hard-to-clean surface outside their home, newly established PA Power Washing is set to cater to many of their needs. The business was started by St. Marys resident Ryan Wehler in May and offers power washing services for surfaces such as driveways, sidewalks, interior garages, brick pavers, sandstone, retaining walls, polywood decks, and vinyl railing and fences.
August 10th
St. Marys resident Rodney Constable questioned members of St. Marys City Council about the diminishing size of the city's police department during the recent council meeting.
"A bulk of my concerns are a result of what I have seen or encountered within the past year or so. My main concern is for the safety of the citizens of St. Marys and for our city police officers," Constable said.
ST. MARYS â The next birthday party or wedding you attend may not have the typical bunches of balloons present to mark the celebration-- a current shortage of helium means there may be nothing to fill them up with.
Local stores that sell helium balloons say suppliers have told them there is currently no new supply, and they may not be able to get more helium until mid-September or even beyond.
