New school year brings new challenges for administrators

With the new school year in full swing, Monday's regular meeting of the St. Marys Area School District's Board of Directors included presentations from building principals on the challenges posed this year by the introduction of new statewide assessments at the secondary level and the encumbrance of increasingly higher benchmarks.
High school principal Josh Williams said that the new school year presents with it changes to the landscape of statewide assessment exams, namely the introduction of the Keystone exams in the subjects of algebra, biology, and literature.

Grant provides leading engineering software for SMAHS

As part of an effort to prepare students for the workplace, Innovated Solutions of St. Marys has obtained a grant for the latest and greatest engineering software for St. Marys Area High School.
The grant is from software giant Siemens, which is providing 30 copies of Solid Edge, a three-dimensional CAD (computer-aided design) software utilized in the school's drafting and engineering classes. Innovated Solutions is a re-seller of Siemens PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) software.

Baker: Volunteerism made country great

MT. ZION - At last week’s dedication of the Bucktail Civil War monument, Sandra Baker, volunteer program director at the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh, said she was there to make “connections.”
“And the way that human beings do that is by swapping their stories. We need you. We need your stories,” Baker said.
She said the Heinz History Center is the largest history museum in Pennsylvania, and the oldest volunteer organization in Pittsburgh.

Parana reports on recent arsons

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg Borough Police Chief Bryan Parana reported on a string of arsons that have recently plagued the area during Monday afternoon's borough council meeting.
"We have had several arsons in the area and we have done, I believe, a very good job," Parana said. "We have questioned several people of interest in those particular offenses and we are working diligently into the conclusion of that investigation."

Elk County Catholic High School rededicated on 50th anniversary

The Most Reverend Donald W. Trautman, Bishop of Erie, was on hand at Elk County Catholic High School on Monday morning to perform a rededication ceremony for the school’s 50th anniversary.
The program began with a special Mass celebrated in the school’s auditorium by Bishop Trautman and several other priests from throughout the area. In addition to students from all levels of the Elk County Catholic School System, other attendees included alumni from the school’s first graduating class, as well as members of the original faculty and staff.
