Grant applications approved for parks project

Several grant applications to obtain possible funding for the St. Marys Recreation Board multi-park project were unanimously approved by members of City Council.
Community and Economic Development Coordinator Tina Gradizzi presented information about each application to council. They include requests for $125,000 to the A.J. and Sigismunda Palumbo Charitable Trust, for $60,000 to the Stackpole-Hall Foundation and for $6,400 to the Elk County Community Foundation, all for phase II project funding.

Small fire at area business

Elk Company 1 Crystal Fire Department and St. Marys Ambulance were dispatched at 12:43 p.m. Wednesday afternoon to Bluewater Thermal Solutions located at 118 Access Rd. off of West Creek Road in St. Marys for a report of a piece of equipment on fire inside the building.

Amoratis involved in creation of new app

Disseminating information to today's youth can be a challenging task since they often do not have the same habits as those in older generations. For John Amoratis, Youth Minister for the three Catholic parishes in St. Marys, that challenge led to the creation of a new app for iOS devices that will eventually help individuals stay in touch with church happenings without having to read a physical copy of the weekly bulletin.
Amoratis explained that the idea came about after roughly 42 of the current 60 Life Teen students were surveyed about how often they read the church bulletin.

Representatives attend non-profit academy

KERSEY – Representatives of non-profit organizations in the Elk County region gathered Tuesday morning at Kersey’s Red Fern banquet hall to attend the Non-profit Academy, a fund-raising workshop hosted by the Elk County Community Foundation and Leadership Elk County.

Shade Tree Commission inundated with questions, concerns

Members of St. Marys City Council relayed complaints they have received from area residents about issues they have with the Shade Tree Commission during their Monday evening meeting.
Four of the five members of the commission were in attendance at the meeting to discuss the issues, specifically on the height of the lower branches on some of the new shade trees and the upkeep of the trees on private residents' property.
