Heroin addict's story serves as warning to kids

Pennsylvania has the 10th highest rate of drug overdoses in the nation with 15 drug-related deaths per 100,000 people in 2008.
In response, the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office has launched a new anti-drug program aimed at steering students away from illicit street drugs, and their prescription counterparts through the visceral firsthand account of one man's descent into an addiction to heroin that nearly claimed his life and landed him behind bars.

Personnel and appointments approved at SMASD meeting

Thursday's meeting of the St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors included votes to fill support positions within the board itself.
Cindy FinGado was appointed as Board Secretary for a four-year term beginning July 1, 2013. The motion to nominate FinGado was made by board member Jim Herzing and seconded by board member Jim Baumgratz. There were no opposing votes cast.

SMASD tables air conditioning decision

With summer fast approaching, the St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors voted to table a decision on the proposed installation of air conditioning in two of the district's elementary school buildings.

Troop 95 presents 100th Eagle Award

Boy Scout Troop 95 in St. Marys celebrated a milestone on Sunday morning with a ceremony to honor its 98th, 99th, and 100th members to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. The scouts presented with their Eagle Award on Sunday were Mitchell Gahr, Scott Reichard, and Garrett Reuscher.

Second indictment filed in Emporium kidnap attempt

WILLIAMSPORT - A grand jury delivered a superseding indictment against Thomas Edward Smith, 58, of Emporium charged with the gunpoint carjacking of an Emporium bank employee he blamed for the loss of his home in a mortgage foreclosure.

St. Marys woman to serve four years behind bars in $1 million theft

ERIE – A St. Marys woman, Sandra Prechtel, 51, charged with embezzling over $1 million from her former employee was sentenced in an Erie Federal Court Friday to serve four years and three months in federal prison.

Concert Choir hosting "A Night at the Grammy's"

The Concert Choir of Elk County will pay tribute to the outstanding achievements in the music industry as they perform a variety of award winning songs during "A Night at the Grammy's", a dinner and song show, taking place May 16-18 starting at 6 p.m. at the Royal Inn in Ridgway.

SMASD residents will see no tax increase with new budget

The St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors voted to approve the district's tentative 2013 budget which contains over $25 million in expenditures, but no tax increase to residents. According to Superintendent Ann Kearney, the vast majority of that $25 million figure comes in the form of increases in the district's contributions to health care costs and retirement funds.
