Martin pleads 'not guilty' in teen murder

RIDGWAY – Accused murderer Nicholas Martin entered a plea of "not guilty" in Elk County Court Friday to homicide and related charges filed in connection with the March 23 stabbing death and disappearance of a Ridgway teen.

SMAHS celebrates Class of 2013 at graduation ceremony

The St. Marys Area High School celebrated the Class of 2013 on Friday evening as part of the school's 117th annual commencement program.
Master of Ceremonies Alex Schreiber greeted his fellow graduates along with family, friends, and school administrators and school board members. Among the speakers of the evening were Valedictorian Alec Foster and Salutatorian Taylor Bellina.

SMAHS seniors enjoy final ride to school

Over the years it has become customary for a few of the graduating seniors at St. Marys Area High School to various types drive farm equipment to school on their day. A trio of seniors put a different spin on that concept Friday morning, leaving the farm equipment at home and instead opting to show up with some real horse power.

Dickinson Center, Inc. opens Wellness Gym at its Drop-In Center

RIDGWAY – Dickinson Center Inc.'s C.O.P.E. (Coalition of People Empowered) Drop-In Center celebrated an open house Thursday afternoon for its new Wellness Gym. The gym is located on the first floor of the Drop-In Center and features various exercise equipment including an elliptical, stationary bike, two treadmills, a universal gym and a small kitchenette with water and healthy snacks along with a table where customers can meet with Dickinson staff.

Daughter and boyfriend charged with stealing father's identity

ST. MARYS – A St. Marys woman and her boyfriend are charged with stealing her father's identity and using it to take out a loan in his name, without his knowledge.

Health care coverage for township employees put to a vote

JAY TWP. – On Wednesday, Jay Township Supervisors approved a new health care package for the township's six employees that will cost the municipality roughly $4,000 less a year, but still exceeds their budgeted amount by about $6,000.

Illegal drugs seized in Emporium incidents

EMPORIUM – The Pa. State Police and Emporium Borough Police report seizing "numerous illegal drugs" in their search of a residence at a 349 East 5th St., on Wednesday.
According to police, criminal charges are pending.

City garage/yard sales regulations

The City of St. Marys would like to remind residents that the city's zoning ordinance of 2005 contains the following regulations which pertain to garage and/or yard sales. Garage and/or yard sales are permitted within any zoning district and an owner and/or occupants may conduct up to four garage/yard sales per year

Council discusses drilling awareness and transit center

During a recent St. Marys City Council meeting the group discussed the importance of staying aware of Marcellus Shale activity.
"This is something I don't think that council can ever escape the responsibility and pay very close attention to what's going on in this industry," said Councilman Dick Dornisch who introduced the topic at the meeting.
