North Central keeping close watch on state budget talks

RIDGWAY – With North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission voting at last month's meeting to take out a nearly quarter of a million dollar line of credit needed to cover expenses like payroll, bills, and rents, the organization has kept a watchful eye on the governor's 2014 budget proposal to see what the future holds.

Elk County Prison inmate charged with possession of contraband

RIDGWAY – An inmate at Elk County Prison has been charged with possession of contraband after corrections officers searching her cell allegedly found prescription drugs in her pillow case.
On June 20, officers searching the Elk County Prison D-Block cell of Sarah Angeline Petitt, 29, of St. Marys, allegedly found a "small baggie containing one and one-half white pills," later identified as Buprenorphine.

Dancers attending national competition

April School of Dance's competition company, DDCC, will proudly travel to their first ever national competition this coming weekend. DDCC's 18 company members along with their teacher and choreographer, Jennifer Blankenship, had an outstanding season with every one of their 18 pieces qualifying for nationals at all four competitions. Two DDCC soloists will be traveling to Atlantic City, N.J. to compete for a national title at Encore DCS. MARYS – Court documents released Tuesday in the case of a St. Marys man charged with planting two pipe bombs in Elk County last month offer few details and little in the way of clues as to what motivated the accused, 20-year-old Kelly J. Shaffer, to allegedly build and attempt to detonate the explosive devices.

ST. MARYS – Police have arrested Kelly J. Shaffer, a 20-year-old St. Marys man who authorities say is responsible for a pair of pipe bombs that were planted at two separate Elk County locations over the course of one week last month.

Bicentennial mural depicts Fox Twp. landmarks

FOX TWP. – Visitors to the Fox Township Municipal Building can view a new mural depicting various township landmarks and buildings created by Joette Mosier Smith, a Fox Township artist.
The 4x8 acrylic painting was created specifically to fit the wall space situated behind the Fox Twp. supervisors table located inside the building's meeting room. It will be on display at the upcoming bicentennial Art and Photography Show being held at the Fox Twp. Community Building during this weekend's celebration.

Man charged with raping woman in front of children

KEATING TWP. – A Smethport man,30-year-old John Frederick Brown Jr., has been charged with brutalizing a woman and terrorizing her family after allegedly attacking and raping a mother of three in the presence of her children, ages two, six and eight.

SMETHPORT – A McKean County District Judge has set bail at $200,000 for a Smethport man charged with rape and related offenses in an incident said to have occurred on June 20 in Keating Township.
