United Way sets new goal for 2013 campaign

The St. Marys Area United Way kicked off its 2013-2014 fundraising campaign during local high school events on Thursday evening. Agency representatives were on hand at the St. Marys Area High School's Meet the Dutch night and Elk County Catholic School System's Family Picnic and Bonfire.
The new goal for this year's campaign is $180,000, a decrease from last year's goal of $195,000.

Kane school board issues statement on Gibbs discipline

The Kane Area School Board Directors issued a statement Friday to "put to rest" the disciplinary issue involving high school teacher Jeff Gibbs.
The statement:
"The process involved with personnel issues prevents the district from making specific comments. We have respected the process. Now that the issue is concluded, we are able to make a statement.

Numerous St. Marys Area High School fall sports athletes were introduced to fellow students, family and friends as part of the school's annual Meet the Dutch event held Thursday evening. Shown walking onto the field are senior members of the team.

CDBG money green-lighted for project

RIDGWAY – The replacement of old water lines in a portion of Wilcox will be partially funded by Community Development Block Grant [CDBG] monies following a public forum and approval at a board of commissioners meeting.
The project will benefit 32 families on four streets in Wilcox: Cherry, Jarrett, Lawrence, and Maple streets.

Pa. bridges worst in the country

RIDGWAY – Barry J. Schoch, secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation [PennDOT] announced last week that officials will implement or expand weight restrictions to roughly 1,000 structurally deficient bridges statewide in an effort to guarantee bridge safety and preserve the aging bridge system.

Horse programs showcased during Farm Bureau Tour

KERSEY – The 2013 Elk County Farm Bureau Legislative Farm Tour showcased the talents of Dave and Diane Gillen as part of their horse training, boarding and recently created riding lesson program on the Double D Farm located on Frey Road in Kersey.
As the host of the tour, the Gillens welcomed attendees to the small family farm. The event took place inside their large indoor horse riding arena.

Individuals remember some of community's small businesses

Small businesses play an important role in communities, and throughout St. Marys' history there have been a variety of businesses that have come and gone that area residents still recall fondly. The Daily Press recently asked users on Facebook which former small businesses are most memorable to them.
One business that was mentioned often was Auman's Store, which was located on Benedict Street.

Co-op gift shop opens at new location

The Country Home Gift Shoppe, a co-op business featuring over 40 vendors, recently held a ribbon-cutting at their new location at 1110 South St. Marys Street.
"We relocated because it has always been our goal to have the shop in a country home to give the 'country cottage' look to match the type of items we sell. We have found our forever home and this will be our last move," said Dawn Radaelli, owner.
The shop's slogan "Where We Make Your House A Home" also echoes Radaelli's sentiments.

Two-vehicle crash in Ridgway

August 27, 2013

There was a two-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon involving a white four-door truck and a white Comcast cargo van at the intersection of state Routes 219 and 948. Specifics on the crash were unavailable at press time as the Ridgway-based state police had yet to file a public information report.
