Demolition work on Erie Avenue saw the building located between Timeless Treasures and Goodwill reduced to a pile of rubble by roughly 3:30 p.m. The 23 Erie Ave. site formerly housed Sam's Menswear.

Commissioners draft response regarding well

The Elk County Board of Commissioners have drafted a response to the Environmental Protection Agency regarding a proposed injection well near James City in Highland Township and request the permit for Seneca Resources Corporation be denied.
The response cites that commissioners have been made aware of "a number of recent news articles reporting a direct connection between injection wells like the one proposed by Seneca Resources and the occurrence of earthquakes."

Aviation festival set for Saturday

With 3,000 visitors to the St. Marys Municipal Airport's inaugural American Spirit Aviation Festival last year, Alan McPherson, airport manager, is hoping to continue the successful event again this year.
"We had more people than we actually expected," McPherson said of the large crowd. "We want to thank all of Elk County for turning out for the event. They really came out to support us and it was a great thing."

Dairy Queen pet contest to benefit Humane Society

The dog days of summer may be over but that has not stopped a number of area residents from taking their canine friends to Dairy Queen for an ice cream treat. Because of the frequency that dogs are brought to the establishment, Dairy Queen owner Theresa Hodgdon came up with a contest that is not only fun for the dogs and their owners, but will also benefit the Elk County Humane Society as well.

Multi-year CDBG project approved

A multi-year sewer line replacement and road improvement project was accepted by St. Marys City Council to submit for funding for the city's annual Community Block Development Grant (CDBG) Entitlement Program.
The city was notified on Aug. 6 their entitlement could be as much as $300,000. Earmarked in the funding is $54,000 or 18 percent of the grant for administration costs. This leaves $246,000 for project use.
On Monday evening, council approved the application for the project prepared by Tina Gradizzi, Community and Economic Development Coordinator and CDBG grant administration.

Plans underway for ECC Family Picnic

Plans are underway for ECC's Family Picnic and bonfire to be held Thursday, August 29. The evening will begin with Mass at 4:30 p.m. followed by a picnic dinner and games at 5 p.m. After dinner, the fall sports teams will be announced at the track. Memorial Park staff enjoy 'RECdiculous' summer

"RECdiculous" is a word coined by Memorial Park staff members Ben and Luke Daghir earlier this summer to mean "recreation at a ridiculously awesome level," a goal staff members strove for in all of their activities throughout the summer at the park.

Secco Designs expands into new location

Secco Designs, LLC recently held a ribbon cutting celebrating the grand opening at their new location at 1052 S. St. Marys Street.
"We have grown into more than a little hobby place. We have grown not only our customer base, but our knowledge and experience has allowed us to offer our customers more than one aspect of printing. With that we needed more room to put the new machines, the better computer equipment and all the orders we have," said Mary Secco, owner.

Fire heavily damages St. Marys house Saturday evening

At 7:15 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17 the Crystal Fire Department and St. Marys Ambulance were called to 643 South Michael Street for reports of a structure fire. The Fox Township Fire Department was called to assist at 7:26 p.m. Members of the Crystal Fire Department were reportedly called back to the scene at 11:24 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 18 for public service.
