ST. MARYS – In his first time visiting the Allegheny National Forest on Friday, United States Forest Service Chief Timothy L. Tidwell said it served as a reminder of what can be achieved through good forest management, something he has devoted his life's work to doing.
With his unique hobby of welding, Steven Labant, 13, of St. Marys has used his self-taught skills to create an array of abstract sculptures, many of which are sold at The Variety Shoppe located on Erie Avenue in downtown St. Marys. Steven, the son of Joe and Cindy Labant of St. Marys is a seventh grade student at St. Marys Catholic Middle School and has been welding for three years.

RIDGWAY - The Elk County Solid Waste Authority has a problem with television.
While the glory days of T.V. may be behind us, the small screens are becoming an immediate and pressing concern to the authority which is increasingly burdened by discarded, antiquated TV sets pouring in from neighboring municipalities, with no where to put them.
RIDGWAY – A Ridgway woman, Hope Ann Soldano, 48, charged with removing her daughter from the father's custody and taking the child some 1,000 miles from home was in Elk County Court Thursday where she called for the charges against her to be dropped, arguing that their prosecution would constitute "double jeopardy" following guilty verdicts on related offenses in Mercer County.
A newly installed fountain is now helping aerate and improve the quality of the water in a pond near the 13th hole at the Bavarian Hills Golf Course. According to Leroy Whitaker, President of the Board at Bavarian Hills, the water filling that pond, along with other ponds near it, forms the headwaters of West Creek, which runs into the Driftwood Branch.
RIDGWAY – A St. Marys man, Dean Schatz, 42, paroled after serving 90 days in prison for striking 21-year-old Natasha Schmitz while driving drunk, has asked a judge to modify conditions of his release that restrict him from imbibing alcohol or setting foot in a bar. Schatz was in Elk County Court Thursday seeking to challenge a court order prohibiting him from consuming alcoholic beverages or patronizing a bar or tavern while on parole and probation.
RIDGWAY - A Ridgway woman charged with removing her daughter from the father's custody and driving the child some 1,000 miles from home, was in Elk County Court Thursday calling for the charges against her to be dismissed claiming a previous sentence handed down in connection with the case constituted double jeopardy which states that a defendant, once found guilty, cannot be tried for the same crime twice.

JOHNSONBURG – Two teens, charged in a string of vandalism, car theft, and burglary, were in District Court Wednesday where they waived hearings on charges stemming from a crime spree that took place throughout Ridgway Borough over the June 1 weekend.
ST. MARYS - The St. Marys Area School District's Board of Directors approved at Monday's meeting the $80,000 purchase of property adjacent to the South St. Marys Street Elementary School, to be used in the creation of a new playground area for students and parking lot for employees.
FOX TWP. – Six individuals have been arrested and charged in a spate of retail thefts at the Walmart Supercenter in Fox Township that police say totaled over $1,000 in stolen goods.
Walmart Loss Prevention Specialists informed state police that on two separate occasions in May, a total of six individuals, in two groups of three, were captured on video shoplifting a combined $1,016.63 in sundry items.
