Pausing to reflect

Area residents took time to reflect on Thursday evening at a gathering at Memorial Park in St. Marys to honor four members of the community who died in a car crash Saturday. Those in attendance released balloons into the sky "In Memory of Gary and Elaine Beimel, Davey Cuneo and "Flossie" Donachy,"-- "In memory of those who have left us, may this light rise to the heavens to shine with you through all eternity."

2 young victims of horrific crash are laid to rest

Two young victims of a horrific traffic accident were laid to rest Thursday following a teary-eyed funeral service at St. Callistus Catholic Church in Kane.
Jarrett Costanzo, 6, of Kane and his 12-year-old cousin, Olivia Douglas of Eldred and formerly of Kane were two of six killed Saturday in a two-vehicle accident on Route 219 just north of Lantz Corners.

'Meth lab' suspected at Mt. Jewett residence

MT. JEWETT – Clad in protective suits and wearing masks attached to air tanks, law enforcement agents looked for evidence Thursday night at a suspected "meth lab" in a Mt. Jewett residence.
It was an eerie scene as the State Police Clandestine Laboratory Response Team (CLRT) donned their equipment to enter the residence at 41 Anderson St. at Oberg Avenue in Mt. Jewett.

Pipeline, well site proposed for Fox Twp.

The Fox Township Supervisors were introduced to a possible future pipeline project during their Wednesday evening meeting. JR Jones of EOG Resources said the company is looking into installing a pipeline inside the current right of way utilized by West Penn and Penelec power companies.
The project would encompasses 200 acres of land inside the township as the possible route. Within that land the township owns three parcels.

Kersey Motor Co. suffers severe fire damage

The Kersey Motor Company, an auto body repair shop located at 108 Zola Rd. in the Coal Hollow section of Fox Township, sustained significant damage during a Tuesday evening fire. The large steel-frame commercial building measuring 40-foot by 80-foot, is owned by Leo (Dave) Surra of Kersey. The fire was ruled accidental in nature and the business was closed and unoccupied at the time of the fire. Damage is estimated at $350,000.

Citizens’ group calls for police chief to resign

An organized community action group known as the Concerned Citizens of Kane is calling for Police Chief Brian Hillard to resign in the wake of criminal charges filed against him.
“He’s a disgrace to our community because of his actions,” Mick Petruney said Wednesday in explaining why the citizens’ group is asking Hillard to step down as police chief. “He should resign.”

St. Marys woman dies from rifle wound

ST. MARYS – A 48-year-old woman is dead after reportedly being gunned down early Tuesday morning at Eastern Sintered Alloys in St. Marys.
According to an affidavit of probable case filed in the case, Michael J. Stephanic Jr., age 44, faces multiple charges including criminal homicide, two felony counts of aggravated assault and a felony charge of discharge of a firearm into an occupied structure.

Scolari pleads to arson charge

RIDGWAY – Michael Anthony Scolari, age 25, pleaded guilty to one felony count of arson as part of a plea bargain with the District Attorney's office stemming from a July 9, 2012 camper fire that occurred at his residence.

Howard Hanna Real Estate opens office in St. Marys

Howard Hanna Real Estate Services and North Star Realty Group of St. Marys recently celebrated their new affiliation during a ribbon-cutting ceremony held at their office located at 20 N. Michael St. on the Diamond in downtown St. Marys.
Members of both companies were on hand along with representatives from the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of St. Marys.

St. Marys man dies after being struck by SUV

FOX TWP. – A 50-year-old St. Marys man died late Monday night after being hit by an SUV on state Route 255, according to police reports.
Edward Joshnik reported walked onto SR 255 near Laurel Run Road shortly after 11 p.m. Monday and was struck by a Ford Escape.
He was later pronounced dead at Elk Regional Health center.
Police said the driver of the SUV will not be charged.
