The St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors voted to approve the district's tentative 2013 budget which contains over $25 million in expenditures, but no tax increase to residents. According to Superintendent Ann Kearney, the vast majority of that $25 million figure comes in the form of increases in the district's contributions to health care costs and retirement funds.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Thursday morning at the Ridgway Reservoir to unveil an educational sign depicting the effects of acid rain on the Big Mill Creek Watershed.
PITTSBURGH – A detention hearing is set for the man charged with kidnapping a Clarion teen and driving her across state lines "for the purpose of engaging in unlawful sexual activity with her." Joshua D. Baker, 31, of Leeper, was indicted by a federal grand jury last week and charged in the disappearance of a 13-year-old juvenile who went missing from her Clarion Borough home at around 2 a.m. on March 28.

JAY TWP. – After over seven months on the run, a Benezette man wanted in Ohio for felony drug possession walked into a local state police barracks a free man and left a prisoner, charged as a fugitive from justice.
KERSEY – A record crowd was on hand during the annual Pennsylvania Wilds Spring Briefing event held at the Red Fern in Kersey, during which time 13 local organizations and individuals were honored for their outstanding work in conservation and sustainable tourism development.

The 9th Annual Trout Derby and Geocaching "Fish" Run will be held Saturday, May 11 and Sunday, May 12. Lucky Leo will be worth $5,000 and Gramps will be valued at $2,500; Leny and Lucy will be worth $1,000 apiece. Others include a fish worth $305 in memory of Joe Weinzierl and the Big Daddy from Fox's Pizza in Ridgway worth $750.

ST. MARYS – A Kersey couple, Breanna Marie Uhl, 19, and Roger Matthew Dugan III, 21 charged with taking their own 11-month-old child from a relative's custody waived hearings in District Court Tuesday on charges stemming from the April 22 incident in which the two allegedly burglarized the legal guardian's home and snatched the child before leading cops on a chase that ended in downtown St. Marys.
On Tuesday afternoon students witnessed the tragic consequences of drunk driving during a mock crash held at Elk County Catholic High School. The staged scene showed two vehicles involved in a head-on collision, each carrying four occupants.
RIDGWAY – Three St. Marys residents, David Keith Aul, 19, Rebecca Elaine Aul, 23, Thomas Peter Yanak, 20, and Ben Samick, 19, charged with killing four whitetail deer outside of hunting season and processing the animals in a St. Marys garage, pled guilty in Elk County Court Monday to various counts of unlawful killing of big game.
RIDGWAY – A Johnsonburg man, Timothy Richard Jones, 20, charged with sexually assaulting a female neighbor on two separate occasions, within days of each other, accepted a plea bargain in Elk County Court that saw felony charges of rape, sexual assault, burglary, and aggravated indecent assault dropped in exchange for his pleading guilty to a reduced charge of misdemeanor indecent assault.
