Township and residents looking to test water

The Jay Township Supervisors are moving ahead with plans to conduct tests on the cause of a mysterious substance inside a ditch situated in area of Mt. Zion Road.
Residents Jim and Shirley Burke were in attendance at the meeting where they described the substance as being a combination of foam suds and sulfuric water which has been leaching out for well over two years.

Women in the Outdoors event set for Aug. 4

The Wapiti Roost Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation will be hosting a Women in the Outdoors event on Sunday, Aug. 4 at the St. Marys Sportsman's Club beginning at 8:30 a.m. The event is geared toward introducing women to various outdoor activities. A registration fee is required and entitles the attendee to their choice of four of 10 classes as well as breakfast and lunch. Class topics range from plant identification to archery to fly fishing to beekeeping.

Emporium police arrest Eckenroad

EMPORIUM – The Emporium Borough Police Department report Anthony William Eckenroad was apprehended shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday night after obtaining an arrest warrant for the sexual assault of a 13-year-old female juvenile.

City cited for DEP violation

St. Marys City Council recently approved the payment of a $750 fine imposed by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) stemming from a violation of the Solid Waste Management Act relating to the transportation of solid waste to Greentree Landfill on June 11, 2013.

Hot weather drives up pool attendance

Hot weather and a break in the rain over the past few days have made it finally feel like summer in St. Marys and have also resulted in an increased attendance at the St. Marys Community Pool.
According to Pool Manager Greg Snelick, a typical day at the pool from 1-8 p.m. generally sees between 200-300 patrons visit the facility. Numbers have been considerably higher this week though.

Paving work continues on SR 255

Paving work continues on the southbound lanes of SR 255 between Kallas Road and Tractor Supply. Crews were working near Comfort Lane on Wednesday afternoon and will continue to work in the area during the remainder of the week.

Shaffer faces charges for fires in Clearfield County

CLEARFIELD COUNTY – Kelly J. Shaffer, 20, of St. Marys, who was charged last month with placing pipe bombs at two separate locations in Elk County in May now faces charges in Clearfield County for setting a pair of fires during that same timeframe the DuBois-based State Police announced Wednesday.

Potential sewage rate increase on council's radar

Over the next several months St. Marys City Council is likely to continue discussing a potential increase in sewage rates. No action is expected to be taken until next year's budget is discussed beginning in October.
"These are some things that have been thrown around, nothing's etched in stone yet. They haven't narrowed it down," said City Manager Dave Greene.

Commissioners honor hazmat team

After receiving certification from state officials, Elk County commissioners on Tuesday honored members of the Elk County Hazardous Materials Response Team for exemplary service to the region.
Team members Mike Bauer and Tom Kerchinski were in attendance Tuesday morning during a 25-minute meeting of the county's Board of Commissioners as officials paid tribute to the local hazmat crew.

Wilcox man dies in crash

WETMORE TWP. – A Wilcox man died Tuesday morning after his vehicle flipped on state Route 6 in Wetmore Township.
According to reports, 38-year-old Charles T. Stahli of Wilcox died in the crash; a passenger, 29-year-old Abby M. O'Rourke suffered minor injuries.
