Illegal dumping concern of recycling officials

Illegal dumping has become an issue of concern yet again as members of the Elk County Solid Waste Authority (SWA) discussed during their recent meeting. Two recent cleanups on Jackson/West Creek Roads in St. Marys and Old State Road, located between Johnsonburg and Wilcox, netted a significant amount of litter and tires.

Local author Dale Fox begins new life in Middle East

At 7:15 p.m. Monday night Ridgway resident and author Dale E. Fox will be departing from JFK Airport to begin a new life overseas. Fox will be leaving behind her love of the Pennsylvania Wilds to make a new start in another part of the world she is passionate about-- the Middle East, particularly Istanbul, Turkey.

Tree City USA ceremony, dedication held

The sunny weather was the ideal setting for Thursday's Tree City USA ceremony celebrating Arbor Day. Fifth grade students from St. Marys Catholic Elementary School gathered at Benzinger Park where they
assisted in the planting of a Purple Prince Flowering Crab during a ceremony hosted by the St. Marys Shade Tree Commission.

Plans are moving ahead with the relocation of the St. Marys Catholic Middle School into the Elk County Catholic High School building as officially announced Wednesday. The move is set to be completed in August 2013 for the start of the new school year.

Electronics inundating recycling center

Elk County Recycling Coordinator Bekki Titchner emphasized the vast amount of electronic items they are being inundated with at the Community Recycling Center in St. Marys. During Tuesday's Elk County Solid Waste Authority (SWA) meeting, Titchner attributed the upswing to the landfill ban which took effect in January and prohibits any computer (desktop or laptop), computer monitor, computer peripheral (printers), televisions, etc. be deposited at a landfill.
