Younger Milliard sentenced for Johnsonburg arson

RIDGWAY – A Ridgway man charged with setting fire to his father's Johnsonburg rental property pleaded guilty in Elk County Court Monday to a felony charge of arson and related offenses. Anthony Karl Milliard, 29, of Ridgway, was sentenced to serve no less than 12 months and no more than 24 months in Elk County Prison where he has been housed since July of last year, charged in the Dec. 4, 2008 fire at 115 First Ave. in Johnsonburg.

City to apply for park project grant

St. Marys City Council unanimously approved several resolutions during its Monday evening meeting.
Among them were permitting Tina Gradizzi, Community and Economic Development Coordinator, to apply for a $200,000 grant on behalf of the St. Marys Recreation Board for phase one of a multi-park project.

SWA pursuing violators, turning around materials more promptly

Solid Waste Authority (SWA) enforcement officer Dave Stubber reported on two active investigations during the latest SWA meeting. The first is in regard to illegal dumping along Old State Road in Ridgway Township. The second entails illegal burning of municipal waste, specifically furniture by Benezette Township officials following their annual cleanup day.

ECVC adds full-service large animal division, emergency services

Federal court grants postponement in Smith kidnapping, carjacking trial

WILLIAMSPORT – Federal public defenders for an Emporium man charged with the August 2012 carjacking of a bank employee at gunpoint have succeeded in once again postponing the trial, this time citing the adverse impacts of federal budget sequestration cuts on their legal practice. Thomas Edward Smith, 58, of Emporium was indicted on Sept. 5, 2012 by a federal grand jury for the Aug. 8, 2012 attempted kidnapping of a female bank executive at gunpoint after an alleged dispute with the bank over a mortgage foreclosure.

Illegal dumping concern of recycling officials

Illegal dumping has become an issue of concern yet again as members of the Elk County Solid Waste Authority (SWA) discussed during their recent meeting. Two recent cleanups on Jackson/West Creek Roads in St. Marys and Old State Road, located between Johnsonburg and Wilcox, netted a significant amount of litter and tires.

Local author Dale Fox begins new life in Middle East

At 7:15 p.m. Monday night Ridgway resident and author Dale E. Fox will be departing from JFK Airport to begin a new life overseas. Fox will be leaving behind her love of the Pennsylvania Wilds to make a new start in another part of the world she is passionate about-- the Middle East, particularly Istanbul, Turkey.

Tree City USA ceremony, dedication held

The sunny weather was the ideal setting for Thursday's Tree City USA ceremony celebrating Arbor Day. Fifth grade students from St. Marys Catholic Elementary School gathered at Benzinger Park where they
assisted in the planting of a Purple Prince Flowering Crab during a ceremony hosted by the St. Marys Shade Tree Commission.
