The Elk County Conservation District, like many of the conservation districts across the state, is hopeful state funding will be restored despite Gov. Tom Corbett's proposal to strip funding and instead have the district potentially rely on money received from Marcellus Shale impact fees.

ST. MARYS – Police, with guns drawn, surrounded a home in downtown St. Marys Friday in what became a brief, yet tense standoff with an armed suspect holed up inside.
City Council plans to vote on their revised fee schedule pending discussion at their latest meeting.
The fees range from those for permits and inspections to construction, engineering and administrative costs.
April 21-27 may have been National Volunteer Week this year, but volunteering is something that individuals can do any time of year and the efforts of those willing to donate their time is generally greatly appreciated by organizations in need.

JOHNSONBURG – Search warrants issued in the investigation into the murder of a Ridgway teen reveal key insights into what evidence police were looking for, and what they found, as they worked to tie their primary suspect, her 22-year-old boyfriend, to the killing.
EMPORIUM – A New York State man, Arthur A. Helzel, 34, is charged with sexually assaulting a child in Cameron County Court while he resided in Emporium between 2007 and 2008. New York State authorities investigating the sexual assault of a juvenile female learned that Emporium was the setting for one in a series of sexual assaults that spanned years and more than one state.
St. Marys City Council heard from Doty McDowell, Pennsylvania Game Commission wildlife conservation officer, about options available to the city in regard to hunting and trapping on city property and within the city limits.

JOHNSONBURG – The man charged with murdering a Ridgway teen and dumping her body in a remote, swampy corner of an area park was in District Court Wednesday where a preliminary hearing saw charges of criminal homicide, aggravated assault and abuse of a corpse upheld against him.
Charges against a Mt. Jewett couple for allegedly withholding food from their three adoptive children have been bound over to McKean County Court.
A Weedville barber shop is keeping business in the family by expanding and offering salon services. Caruso Barber Shop and Full Service Salon, located at 209 River Rd., is now a one-stop shop for men, women and children's hair care needs.
