One dead in Mersen explosion

Officials on Thursday confirmed the death of a St. Marys Mersen USA employee after an industrial explosion in the morning.
Noah Nichelson, St. Marys Mersen USA general manager said in a statement that one employee was killed and two were injured following “an equipment related accident” at the plant.
Emergency dispatchers confirmed a call went out shortly after 9 a.m. to Mersen USA in St. Marys, located at 1032 Trout Run Rd.

Radon poses silent threat

With elevated levels of radon affecting almost half of Pennsylvania homes and being the second leading cause of lung cancer in the state, residents are encouraged now more than ever to have their homes tested for the colorless, odorless, radioactive gas.
Wally Hanes of Hanes H.C.R., LLC in St. Marys, is DEP-certified in radon mitigation and said 50 percent or higher of homes in the Elk County area have tested positive for radon. He has found readings from as high as 175 pCi/L in Johnsonburg down to 1 pCi/L with levels being elevated north of Elk County toward Kane.

Roessler shares message of hope with ECC students

As part of their Catholic Schools Week celebration, Elk County Catholic High School invited Catholic singer/songwriter Lee Roessler and his band to perform for students on Wednesday afternoon in the school's auditorium. Later that evening, a free concert for the community was also performed by Roessler from 7-9 p.m. at ECCHS.

Electronics recycling costs on the rise

ELoop, the recently-chosen group which collects electronic recyclables from the community recycling center, has informed the Elk County Solid Waste Authority that items previously picked up free of charge will now carry a fee of 6 cents per pound to be collected.
"Because of the market, because of the stockpiling, because of the difficulty of getting materials moved, eLoop is going to start charging us this for all the items that are not covered under the electronics recycling law," Titchner said.
