Country music band Sawyer Brown coming to St. Marys

Tickets are going fast for the upcoming Sawyer Brown concert taking place on Saturday, March 1 in St. Marys Area High School's Carpin Auditorium. Showtime is set for 7 p.m. with guitar comedian Kier as the opening act.
"We like the energy that they bring. It's a really entertaining show," said Sandy Buerk, St. Marys Auto Body co-owner and show sponsor.
A limited amount of tickets remain which may be purchased the auto body shop along Trout Run Road or online at All seats are reserved with a crowd capacity of 1,344 seats.

St. Marys man dies in fire

A 77-year-old St. Marys man died early Saturday morning in a fire at 523 Brusselles St., St. Marys.
A report filed by Trooper Robert J. Southern of the Ridgway-based state police confirmed the death of James L. Robbins in the blaze which reportedly broke out shortly after 3 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18.
His wife, Joan M. Robbins, 69, escaped the blaze and was reportedly transported to UPMC Mercy Hospital. Sources familiar with the situation confirmed Saturday night that she was being treated for second degree burns but had also suffered from severe smoke inhalation.

SMASD issues annual report

The St. Marys Area School District issued their 2014 annual report which is available on the district website at Their four main goals, which Superintendent Ann Kearney said had been continuously changed and narrowed down, pertain to graduation rate, mathematics, English Language Arts and School Performance Profile (SPP).
Also included in the report are a summary of the facilities and the work completed in 2013, demographics/statistics, budget and grants, professional development, information on individual schools, music and athletics programs.

Hearing is slated for driver in 6-fatality crash

SMETHPORT – A preliminary hearing for the alleged drug-influenced driver in a six-fatality traffic accident is tentatively scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27 before Kane District Court Judge Dave Engman.
The driver-- Kathleen S. Douglas, 37, of Kane-- is charged with manslaughter in the horrific accident Aug. 31 on Route 219 near Lantz Corners.
Douglas faces 35 charges, including 15 felonies linked with the accident that killed her 12-year-old daughter, Olivia, her 6-year-old nephew Jarrett Costanzo of Kane and four members of a St. Marys family. 

St. Marys Area School District lunch survey results available

Several changes have been implemented in the St. Marys Area School District lunch program
following responses submitted as part of a survey. On a daily basis up to 1,900 students utilize the school meal program in five separate buildings.
"The comments, concerns, and suggestions are not only appreciated, but will also be used to improve our quality, service, and commitment to our students in providing them with a healthy, well-balanced breakfast and lunch," said Jennifer Asti, director of food services.

How Benedictine Sisters ended up in St. Marys

By now, it is well known that the Benedictine Sisters will soon be leaving St. Marys. While their story in St. Marys is drawing to a close, how it began and the legacy they left will always be a part of the community's history. Much of their early story was documented by historian Charlie Schaut in his book 'History of St. Marys: The Formative Years,' which was published in 1968.

Residents react to closing of convent

Following the recent announcement of the closing of St. Joseph Monastery in St. Marys current and former area residents have voiced their reaction to the news, a majority of which are of sadness and disappointment paired with fond memories of The Benedictine Sisters of Elk County and their contributions to the community.
"A tremendous loss for our community," said Chris Suchocki Gismondi while Mariann Grossman Bowser indicated she was "so sad to see something gone that has been there for years."

Community Blood Bank blood drive

Grace Eisenman of Ridgway donates at Community Blood Bank's blood drive on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at the Courthouse Annex in Ridgway. Community Blood Bank will be holding another drive at Elk Regional Health Center on Feb. 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Convent closing imminent

After three years of prayerful study the Benedictine Sisters of Elk County agreed to move forward with plans to close St. Joseph Monastery in St. Marys.
According to a press release, issued on Tuesday afternoon, stated this decision was made on Monday.
As the work of closing moves forward not all the questions have been answered and much work remains.

2014 Dynamic Dance Competition Company

The Dynamic Dance Competition Company, DDCC, of April School of Dance in St. Marys is excited to begin their competition season this weekend.
The company, directed by Jennifer Blankenship of Kane, will travel to Pittsburgh to attend DanceMakers, Inc.
