Recruitment and retention continues to plague fire departments throughout the U.S. including the St. Marys Crystal Fire Department.
Fire Chief Bill Kraus reported this challenge along with overhauls he believes need to be made in training requirements during a recent St. Marys City Council meeting.
While the number of volunteer firefighters is declining, the age of volunteer firefighters is increasing. This is evident as the average age of CFD firefighters ranges from 40 to 50 years old, proving a need to recruit younger members.
ST. MARYS â€“ State Police fire marshal Corporal Greg Agosti conducted an investigation along with Crystal Fire Department and the St. Marys City Police Department regarding a Sunday night fire that heavily damaged a residence at 572 S. St. Marys St. in St. Marys.
The victim was Michael S. Murgash of St. Marys.
For the past several years the Confirmation students from St. Marys' three Catholic parishes have held collections after each Mass during the same weekend as the Super Bowl. Known as 'Souper Bowl Sunday,' the proceeds from the annual event benefit the Christian Food Bank of St. Marys. This year's collection, which was held Feb. 1-2, saw $4,951 donated for the organization.
On Monday morning, Liz and Rick Boni, founders of Ridgway's annual Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous, gave a presentation on the history of the Rendezvous, from its humble beginnings in 1999 to the internationally-known event it has become in its fifteenth year.
"Right off the bat it was kind of an international flavor," said Liz Boni of the 1999 gathering.
An outpouring of love, gratitude and respect for the Benedictine Sisters of Elk County was evident on Sunday during a special community celebration honoring those who have served at St. Joseph Monastery in St. Marys, the oldest Benedictine monastery in the U.S. which is slated to close after 162 years of service.
A large crowd gathered at Queen of the World Church for a vespers service, program and social. The guests of honor included the remaining 17 sisters serving at the monastery, their family and friends along with sisters visiting from surrounding monasteries.

DuBOIS â€“ Thomas Gasbarre, board chairman, announced Friday that in order to publicly solidify its network of services, Penn Highlands Healthcare will change the names and logos of its four hospitals to reflect the Penn Highlands brand.
The four campuses will be known as Penn Highlands Brookville, Penn Highlands Clearfield, Penn Highlands DuBois and Penn Highlands Elk. Accompanying each new hospital name will be the logo utilized by the parent organization, Penn Highlands Healthcare.
A part of Sunday's Community Celebration honoring the Benedictine Sisters of Elk County is a detailed program featuring a listing of each of the 281 sisters who served at St. Joseph Monastery throughout its 162-year history.
Those attending the service will receive a small 15-page program complete with vespers service details, program information and listings of each sister who served in St. Marys, their date of birth and death if applicable, locations of where they transferred and additional monastery information.
Samantha Beaver Family Child Care, a child care facility run by Samantha Beaver, 27, of Ridgway, recently opened its doors in November of 2013. She operates the facility in conjunction with Darlene Beaver, who has over 35 years in childcare experience and is currently in the process of attaining an associates degree in child development.
The Crystal Fire Department continues to maintain a superior level of fire protection for residents of St. Marys as well as outlying areas as reported by Fire Chief Bill Kraus during a recent St. Marys City Council meeting.
The overall average response time for incidents last year was just over six minutes, with their quickest responses being five minutes, This indicates the time from pager activation until the first unit's arrival on scene.
