Toby Water customers receive clean water for Christmas

Just in time for Christmas, Toby Water customers in Fox Township were informed Tuesday the boil water notice had been lifted following the discovery of a potentially dangerous parasite found in the local water system just over a month ago.
According to Rob Singer, Toby Water Treatment Plant system operator, the township installed an upgraded connection to St. Marys Water in order to supply customers with much needed clean water.

Favorite coach contest entering fourth year

The annual Coaches vs. Cancer program, which raises funds to benefit the American Cancer Society, will once again be held in conjunction with the Elk County Holiday Basketball Tournament, which will be held on Friday and Saturday at the St. Marys Area High School. According to Roben Daghir, who coordinates the annual fundraiser, this year's event will featuring returning favorites as well as new additions.

Christmas Day Dinner marks 20 years

Food, fun and friendship is what the annual Christmas Day Dinner has been providing to St. Marys area residents for the past 20 years.
Each year the community mission project has grown in popularity. Last year 223 meals were served in the dining hall while another 225 meals were delivered to area residents.
The free event is open to all residents of St. Marys, Fox Township and Jay Township. Meals are served beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Christmas Day at the First United Methodist Church's Asbury Hall, located along North St. Marys Street.

Benezette man charged in jewelry theft

JAY TWP. – A Benezette resident has been charged with the theft of various pieces of jewelry, including items of sentimental value to Denise Lorraine Bahl, 55, of Force.
Robert Joseph Wehner, 46, of Benezette was charged with theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property when another acquaintance, Earnest Caldarelli, searched Wehner's belongings and found him to be in possession of Bahl's jewelry as well as jewelry belonging to Caldarelli. Wehner reportedly told police that he wasn't present when they went through his suitcase and doesn't know where the jewelry came from.

DECA students take home top honors at districts

Recently, 44 St. Marys Area High School students advanced to the state DECA competition after taking home top spots in the organization's District 1 competition.
Last week, SMAHS played host to the district competition held at the Fine Line in St. Marys where 198 students competed from McDowell High School, Venango County Vo-Tech, Bradford Area High School and SMAHS.
Students are now busy preparing for the state competition taking place Feb. 24-26 at the Hershey Lodge.

NJS Christmas concert held Sunday afternoon

The Nicholas J. Sinibaldi Symphonic Band held its annual Christmas concert on Sunday afternoon at the St. Marys Area High School auditorium. The band consisted of musicians of all ages, some who even came in from out of state. While there was no charge to attend the concert, a free will offering was taken and proceeds will benefit the St. Marys Police Department.

Spreading Christmas cheer

South St. Marys Street Elementary School first grade presented their Christmas play, "Toys! The Night They Came Alive" on Friday afternoon. Inside the packed auditorium were parents, grandparents and other relatives anxious to see their favorite student dancing, acting and singing as elves, toy soldiers, rag dolls, teddy bears, jacks-in-the-box, princess dolls, puppets, monkeys and a clock along with Santa and Mrs. Claus. The 25-minute play included upbeat songs as "Glee Under the Tree", "Teddy Bear Tango", "Rag Doll Rock" and "Christmas Dreams" as well as "We Wish You a Merry Christmas."

Greene presents monthly manager's report

St. Marys City Manager Dave Greene recently presented his manager's report including various activities he participated in in late November and throughout December.
Greene met with Jeff Reams from Gannett-Fleming to discuss the proposal the company submitted to study the Elk Creek flooding problem. During the visit they drove around the Stackpole complex and walked the area of Prechtl's property on Brusselles Street where they spotted a few beaver dams which were holding the water back.

Christmas tree tradition continues at visitor center

BENEZETTE – The Great Room at the Elk Country Visitor Center is typically filled with interactive displays and mounts of various animals native to the Pennsylvania Wilds. For the last month though, it has also been home to a roughly 13-foot tall tree that was cut down on the center's property.
According to Carla Wehler, operations manager at the visitor center, staff members put up the tree the weekend before Thanksgiving and plan to keep it up until after the New Year, "unless the needles are falling."
