Volunteers assist in convent cemetery project

November 2, 2014

A small group of local residents lent a hand to the Benedictine Sisters of Elk County by giving the St. Joseph Monastery cemetery a facelift.
With the anticipated closing of the convent drawing closer and closer, there are very few sisters to complete the numerous unfinished projects.
Among those was the cleaning of the grave markers in the sisters cemetery.
That is where Jim and Cathie Bauer of Church Street stepped in along with the help of 12 of their family members and friends.

District releases statement after incident

The following statement was released Friday afternoon by the St. Marys School District on social media regarding an incident earlier in the day: 
The purpose of this message is to keep parents informed and students in the district safe. It was reported [Friday] that a male stranger operating a 2008-2010 grey or silver Chevy Silverado with a matching cap and tinted windows in the Chicken Hill area of Kersey approached St. Marys school students and offered them a ride to school.

Kuntz's efforts continue to benefit less fortunate

Once again local teacher Laura Kuntz is reaching out to the community in seeking donations for her Christmas in Kentucky program, which provides gifts to the less fortunate in the one of the poorest areas of the U.S.
"Since 1996, the St. Marys area has generously committed to the success of this program to needy families in the Beattyville community," Kuntz said. "Those trapped in this cycle of poverty find it difficult or impossible to provide their children with the opportunity to experience the "dreams" of Christmas."
Currently Kuntz is collecting a variety of items for the program.

Circus of Souls haunted house welcomes visitors

This year Jenny and Allan Sylvis are continuing their Halloween tradition by hosting a Circus of Souls haunted house. Those brave enough are welcome to visit this evening from 6 - 9 p.m. Visitors must pass through a massive clown head situated in the driveway of their home at 148 Huston Rd., near the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Each room, situated both inside and outside, has a different theme. Numerous characters are sure to spook and include a maniacal bike-riding clown, a tarot card reader, a knife thrower and a mauled lion tamer, just to name a few.

Mini Mudder to raise funds for school playground

Those not afraid to get dirty are the perfect participants for the Elk County Mini Mudder 7K Run/Walk Obstacle Run benefitting the Fox Township Elementary School Playground Project.
The event centers around 10 obstacles in which participants get down and dirty while navigating their way over, under and through haystacks, giant tires, tubes and a mud pit.
Pre-registration concludes today with the race taking place Sunday, Nov. 9. Those pre-registering will receive a race discount, complimentary T-shirt, water, snacks and door prizes entries.

North Central reviews past fiscal year

RIDGWAY – Members of the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission expressed excitement over the work that has been completed by the organization throughout the past fiscal year.
Board Chairman Dan Freeburg set the tone of the past year's review by talking about the recent successes of local industries, especially the Marcellus Shale industry and powdered metal industry, but he also spoke about the need to remember the industries that have been "the lifeblood" of the area for a long time.

Volunteers to host Haunted House Friday

Once again volunteers are busy preparing a Haunted House for area residents for area residents to visit on Friday from 5-9 p.m. The house is located next to Rick's Doughboys restaurant along Brusselles Street in downtown St. Marys.

SR 120 being prepped for construction

RIDGWAY – A lot of activity can be seen along state Route 120 between The Well Restaurant and St. Marys.
Several workers are attempting to control erosion and extend drainage pipes along the roadway.
According to foreman Bob Flood, a construction company is contracted by PennDOT for this project which will have a major part of it being done through the 2015 construction season.
