Smoke on the Mountain BBQ synonymous with community

KERSEY – Event organizers are in high gear as they prepare for the Smoke on the Mountain BBQ cook-off scheduled for this weekend.
A cruise-in will be held Friday starting at 4 p.m. with DJ Mookie on hand.
The BBQ competition gets underway Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.

Metco among ImPAct winners

Metco Industries, Inc. of St. Marys recently earned a 2014 Governor's ImPAct Award. In the north central region, Metco won the Jobs First Award.
"Metco is proud to create jobs in Pennsylvania and especially for the local economy," said Rodney A. Brennen, VP/CFO of Metco. "Our future is bright with double digit growth planned for each of the next few years."
According to Brennen, Metco currently employs nearly 200 and expects to expand to near 250 over the next couple years.

Hospitalization plan, projects approved

The renewal of the hospitalization plan for Fox Township employees was recently approved by the Fox Township Supervisors making employees responsible for their deductible if they plan to continue with the existing plan.
This new change, suggested by Keller, will kick in July 3.
Scott Surra explained that plan is "grandfathered" under the new law in that if an employee supposedly likes their plan they can keep it for another year and it does not necessarily meet all the criteria under the Affordable Care Act.

Bids awarded, residents concerns addressed

The bid for dust oil was awarded to Midland Asphalt for $3.04/unit for 20,000 gallons of MC-70 oil. Additional bids were submitted by Jefferson Paving and Russell Standard each for $3.27/unit.
The bid for the sale of the township's 1990 International dump truck was awarded to James McNulty for $3,600. Additional bids were submitted by Rob Wolfel for $2,766.29 and Krishart for $2,666.66. The sale was approved with the condition of the township not using the transfer case out of the 1990 truck for the township's 2001 dump truck; the transfer case in the 2001 truck recently went bad.

Vacant building to be condemned

RIDGWAY – One building in downtown Ridgway sustained heavy structural damage as a result of the May 21 flood. The former Rohr Upholstering building, located along North Broad Street, saw the washing out of much of the foundation from the overflow of Elk Creek.

Ridgway man pleads guilty to possessing gun in Kane

SMETHPORT – A Ridgway man has pleaded guilty to a felony charge of illegally possessing a handgun in Kane in 2013.
William Aaron Fourness Jr., 25, entered the plea Tuesday in McKean County Court in Smethport.
Under a plea agreement, six other charges have been dismissed. These charges include possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, two charges related to driving under the influence (DUI) of a controlled substance and operating a red 2009 Subaru with a cracked windshield.

Elk County Boulder Dash upcoming

RIDGWAY – The Elk County Boulder Dash, a 20-mile run, walk or hike event is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 9 at 8 a.m. starting at the firemen's carnival grounds along North Broad Street in downtown Ridgway.
The event takes place on 20 miles of State Game Lands 44, just south of Ridgway, featuring about 4,000 feet of vertical rise over the course. The deadline to register online at www.elkcountyboulderdash.com is Friday, Aug. 1.

District approves personnel issues

Among the latest personnel changes approved by the St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors are new hires, awarding of numerous supplemental contracts, transfer of support personnel, resignations, and leaves of absences.
School board member Bert Sorg cast an opposing vote for approval of the June personnel stating he "felt some of them could've been handled differently."
All employment recommendations are provisional for 30 days pending receipt of Act 151 and Act 34 clearance documentation and pre-employment drug testing if applicable.

Undefeated run a team effort for Crusaders

Over the past few months, the Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team has racked up an impressive 26-0 record and has one final game remaining in their season–the PIAA Class A State Championship on Friday afternoon.
Though only nine players can be out on the field at any given time, reaching this point and maintaining a perfect record has taken the effort of all 20 of the players on the Crusaders' roster.

School district budget shows no tax increase

The 2014-15 St. Marys Area School District budget of $26,122,346 was unanimously approved by the school board.
"The great news for the community is there is no tax increase for the upcoming year," said Superintendent Ann Kearney. "Once again this is a budget that the district can be very proud of. We are in fiscally sound condition for the upcoming year. This is based on past decisions made by a very responsible board over the years."
This year's $26 million budget is an increase from the previously budgeted $25,264,867 in 2013-14.
