In just over a week members of the community are once again encouraged to come together for events in honor of Michael Proudfit, former St. Marys Community Pool lifeguard who was killed in a car crash in February 2011. The inaugural Michael B. Proudfit Memorial 5K Walk/Run and Mike Proudfit Night were held last year with much success, and both events will return this year, on Aug. 4 and 5, respectively.
With Sunday hunting once again becoming a hot topic in Pennsylvania due to the Lancaster County-based Hunters United for Sunday Hunting asking a federal judge to throw out the state's longstanding ban, The Daily Press recently asked readers on our Facebook page their thoughts on the matter.
The response indicated considerable support for hunting to be allowed on Sundays, though some individuals suggested that certain restrictions be put in place.
Cloudy skies on Tuesday morning made for slightly cooler and more comfortable temperatures for the roughly 80 youngsters who turned out for Benzinger Park's annual Activity Day.
"It's a comfortable day," said Benzinger Park Director John Schneider. "We don't have to deal with some of the warm temperatures that we had last week."
WEEDVILLE â€“ The deterioration of Mt. Zion Road was discussed recently by Jay Township Supervisors. Shirley Burke, a resident of the road, inquired as to when the hauling by the natural gas producing company EQT, will end in order to cut down on the dust.
Supervisor Jeremy Rippey said EQT is now hauling out the flowback water they trucked in previously.
Event organizers are looking forward to the region's 8th annual Tasting in the Wilds event scheduled for this Saturday, July 27 from 12-7 p.m. at the Ridgway Firemen's Carnival grounds.
The event, which serves as a fundraiser for the Ridgway Heritage Council, is a rain or shine affair; the first year the event took place was 2006 and Abbi Peters, executive director of Elk County Council on the Arts [ECCOTA] and a member of the Ridgway Heritage Council, said the event continues to grow with each passing year.
Through the end of July, Memorial Park staff are seeking submissions for their home video contest. Entries are open to residents of all ages throughout Elk County and the videos can be from any occasion, they simply have to be family friendly and under three minutes in length.
BERWICK â€“Â The St. Marys Little League Softball senior league all stars earned the first state title in St. Marys Little League Softball history with a 4-3 come from behind victory over Plains on Monday afternoon at Ber-Vaughn Park in Berwick, capping an exciting week of softball action for the St. Marys team.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ The Ridgway-based state police, in cooperation with the Johnsonburg Borough Police Department, report filing charges against a 17-year-old male juvenile of Johnsonburg stemming from a nearly yearlong arson investigation.
The STATE CHAMPION St. Marys Little League Softball senior league all stars will be returning to town between 5:30 and 6 p.m. Monday evening-- they will meet at GKN along the Million Dollar Highway, then ride through Kersey and St. Marys before arriving at Benzinger Park-- let's welcome back our champion ladies in style.
The St. Marys Little League Softball senior league all stars defeated Plains 4-3 Monday afternoon to win the state championship at Ber-Vaughn Park in Berwick.
