A campaign to raise funds for the American Cancer Society has recently been launched in the St. Marys area. A group of flamingos may show up in your yard unexpectedly. They will be accompanied by signs providing you with the details on how to get rid of these pesky pink Phoenicopteridae (family name meaning "Phoenix's Wing") off your property.

Animal abandonment, particularly of cats, is a recurring problem in the area, with many being left near farms or in other remote areas.
Mary Meyer, 14, of St. Marys, recently came face-to-face with this problem while walking with her mother, Donna, and dog, Malu, near her home in the Benzinger Road area on the evening of June 19.

For Harry Potter fans, "it all ends" with Thursday's midnight release of the final film in the wizarding series, which has swept the world by storm. The newest of the movies, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," is the second in a two-part series, the first released in November 2010.
"Everyone is really excited about it. The fans are also kind of melancholy, as a 10-year journey with the series all ends with this movie," said Darlene Lynch, co-owner of the Apollo Theatre in St. Marys.

JAMES CITY – A summary trial on a charge of violating the construction code by a Highland Township campowner is scheduled Monday before District Judge Tony King in Johnsonburg.
The Highland Township Board of Supervisors discussed the upcoming legal action during its regular monthly meeting Wednesday.
Russ Braun, the Highland Township building code administrator, last year reported that the "abandoned" camp is "unsafe" and is a "clear and present fire danger."

St. Marys resident and attorney Mark Jacob has been named as the Democratic nominee on the ballot for Magisterial District Justice 59-3-03 in the Nov. 8 general election.
Jacob was nominated by the Elk County Democratic Party's executive committee this week following the withdrawal of Democratic primary ballot winner Stephen P. Skrzypek of Kersey. Skrzypek took the top spot on the May 17 ballot. He withdrew his candidacy on July 5.
Both candidates cross-filed on the ballots, with Jacob winning the Republican nomination. He finished second on the Democratic ballot behind Skrzypek.

The annual mock emergency drill at the St. Marys Community Pool that took place Wednesday afternoon went well, according to pool manager Gregory L. Snelick.
Each year, Snelick and members of the St. Marys Area Ambulance Service coordinate a mock 911 call and drill to better prepare pool lifeguards in the execution of emergency procedures.
Snelick said pools and surrounding areas can be dangerous in any location, even under close supervision, and it only takes a second for someone to be in trouble.
"The purpose of the drill is to look for areas that need to be improved," Snelick said.

A recent inspection by state officials found Elk Haven Nursing Home below the state industry average in the number of deficiencies found, a positive result following the completion of an annual weeklong standards survey conducted at the facility in late May.
JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg Municipal Authority member Ed Gapinski updated borough council members Monday on the status of the water sales agreement with the Hunt Marcellus Operating Company.
The agreement for the municipal authority to sell the Hunt Marcellus Operating Company up to 157,000 gallons of water per day was put on hold last month by the state Department of Environmental Protection [DEP].
"We are in trouble with DEP," Gapinski said. "We have outstanding VOCs [Violations of Compliance]. We have a control panel that should be installed at Silver Creek right now."

The Central PA 4th Fest continues to draw a massive crowd to their annual celebration, all of which is centered around a 43-minute spectacular fireworks display touted as the one of the top three in the U.S., behind New York City and Boston.
"We're extremely pleased and happy with the turnout. Things fell in place wonderfully. We were blessed with good weather, the crowds came out and overall had a wonderful day," said 4th Fest Executive Director Bernie Keisling. "It was great to see all the families walking around. Mission accomplished."

Former St. Marys resident Jenn Steele, now a resident of Titusville, Fla., submitted several photos of the final NASA space shuttle mission as the space shuttle Atlantis lifted off on Friday, July 8. An estimated one million spectators gathered along Florida's space coast to witness the epic event. Due to overcast skies, many spectators only witnessed about 10 seconds of the launch before the shuttle disappeared into the clouds. Emotions ran high as the 30-year program marked an end of an era commemorating the 135th flight in the space shuttle program.
