Celebrating 20 years of dance

Current and former students of April School of Dance are showcasing a wide array of performances during the school's 20th annual review, "Deja Vu." This year also marks the 30th year of teaching for April Cush, dance school owner.
The 2.5-hour show, with a 10-minute intermission, will take place tonight and Saturday evening beginning at 7 p.m. inside the St. Marys Area High School auditorium. Advance tickets, priced lower than those sold at the show, are available at The Village Peddler on Erie Avenue in St. Marys and Cliffe's in Ridgway.

Area residents react to Zito Media upgrades

Zito Media officially began upgrades to its cable television service in St. Marys on Monday and customers were quick to vent their frustrations with the process.
Among the upgrades being offered is the addition of over 60 high-definition (HD) channels. In order to receive the high-definition channels, customers need to obtain an HD digital receiver box, the installation of which has proven vexing for some.
"We picked up the boxes and hooked them up today. One TV is working, the other isn't. Does it have to be this hard?," Patty Carpin Posteraro of St. Marys said.

Rigas updates Fox supervisors on Zito cable upgrade

During Wednesday evening's Fox Township Supervisors' meeting, Jim Rigas of Zito Media provided a brief update on the cable television provider's ongoing upgrades to area subscribers.
Rigas stated Monday was the busiest day for the company's St. Marys office, which marked the first day the new cable boxes became available to subscribers.

Lights, camera, cure! as Relay for Life goes Hollywood

Celebrate, remember, fight back are the three inspirational words associated with the 2012 Relay for Life of Elk County running from noon on Friday, June 8 to noon on Saturday, June 9 at the Fox Township Community Park in Kersey.
A new activity at this year's relay is the talent show scheduled from 7-11 a.m. Saturday on the park's stage. Registration will take place from 6-7 a.m. on a first-come basis. First-, second- and third-place trophies will be awarded in each age group of 5-9, 10-17 and 18 to adult.

'A Season on the Allegheny' book-signing event this weekend

Western Pennsylvania resident Robert Hilliard is in love with the land—so much so that he’s written a book about it. The author recently released “A Season on the Allegheny,” a tale about the year he spent hunting and exploring on the Allegheny National Forest, and will be holding a book signing this Saturday, June 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Forest County Visitor Center, 422 Elm Street, Tionesta, PA 16353. The book is also available on Amazon in paperback or in Amazon Kindle format.

Moore discusses DEP program

Jake Moore, working out of the state Department of Environmental Protection's Meadville office, gave a report Tuesday morning on the source water protection technical assistance program [SWPTAP] during an Elk County Board of Commissioners meeting.
Local source water protection [SWP] programs are community-based voluntary efforts to protect drinking water sources used by community water systems. Local SWP programs are effective tools for public health protection, water supply security and managing operational and capital costs through improved or maintained source water quality.

New ERHC maternity unit delivers on form, function

ST. MARYS – Elk Regional Health Center's highly anticipated eight-bed maternity unit was revealed at an open house Tuesday in St. Marys.
The new maternity unit, which cost approximately $1.7 million to complete, began July 2011 and is part of ERHC's $10.3 million construction and renovation project, which includes a new third floor with 42 new, private medical/surgical/pediatrics rooms with private baths in each; two new, centrally located nurses' stations to oversee each half of the medical/surgical/pediatrics unit; and a new 10-bed geriatric behavioral health unit.

Elk County Humane Society, prison embarking on training program

A program pairing prisoners with canines is a new endeavor on which the Elk County Humane Society and the State Correction Institute-Forest in Marienville are embarking in a multifaceted effort of adopting out dogs, assisting military veterans and providing inmates with confidence.
Recently SCI-Forest personnel Michael Overmyer, deputy superintendent for centralized services; and Brenda Haupt, canine training program coordinator and unit manager at the prison, visited the Elk County Humane Society, where they picked up numerous supplies for the program including dog crates, food and toys.

Council revises proposed jake brake ordinance

Members of St. Marys City Council discussed the city's proposed engine brake or "jake brake" ordinance, permitting its use in specified sections of the city.
During Monday evening's meeting, Councilman Ned Jacob stated that because the ordinance covers every street and alley in the city, that is a large area to cover considering how much of state routes 120 and 255 are within the city limits.
Mayor Sally Geyer stated she does not agree with the fine, set at up to $500. If violators default on payment they are subject to imprisonment of up to 90 days.

Curfew extended for baseball tournament

City Council approved a request by the American Legion Region 8 Committee to relax the city's curfew from July 21-25 for a baseball tournament taking place at Berwind Park.
Councilman Bob Roberts said although council has approved this request several times in the past, he believes organizers stipulated an anticipated ending time.
"I understand the reason for it, but as this stands would it be for a half hour from the end of the game, until the next day, until midnight? What are they asking for?" Roberts questioned.
