Parana reports on recent arsons

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg Borough Police Chief Bryan Parana reported on a string of arsons that have recently plagued the area during Monday afternoon's borough council meeting.
"We have had several arsons in the area and we have done, I believe, a very good job," Parana said. "We have questioned several people of interest in those particular offenses and we are working diligently into the conclusion of that investigation."

Elk County Catholic High School rededicated on 50th anniversary

The Most Reverend Donald W. Trautman, Bishop of Erie, was on hand at Elk County Catholic High School on Monday morning to perform a rededication ceremony for the school’s 50th anniversary.
The program began with a special Mass celebrated in the school’s auditorium by Bishop Trautman and several other priests from throughout the area. In addition to students from all levels of the Elk County Catholic School System, other attendees included alumni from the school’s first graduating class, as well as members of the original faculty and staff.

ECC has seen many changes over the past 50 years

Fifty years ago today, on Monday, Sept. 10, 1962, Elk County Christian High School officially opened its doors to students for the first time, replacing Central Catholic High School.
The newly constructed high school was under the direction of Headmaster Rev. Daniel J. Martin and boasted an enrollment of 725 students and a faculty of 40 teachers.

Hunt of a Lifetime benefit planned for Sept. 22-23

The Bucktail Archers Association is currently gearing up for its second biannual, and third overall, benefit event to raise funds for the Hunt of a Lifetime Foundation, Inc. The group, in conjunction with the St. Marys Sportsmen's Club and Bowfishing Association of America, will be holding a variety of activities at the St. Marys Sportsmen's Club, located at 1339 Glen Hazel Rd. in St. Marys, on Saturday, Sept. 22 and Sunday, Sept. 23.

Lingering concerns surround new assessment exams

MARYS - With the Keystone Exams, a new statewide assessment, to be implemented in Pennsylvania schools this year, concerns surrounding the rigors of testing facing its student body and the logistics of prepping student performance on the exams, an eventual requirement for graduation, were discussed by the St. Marys Area School District's board of directors at Thursday's workshop meeting.

Bucktails had distinguished look, fighting style

MT. ZION - At last week’s monument dedication for the Elk County Rifles, Company G of the Pennsylvania Bucktails, James Burke of the Mt. Zion Historical Society gave the opening remarks and discussed the formation of the famous Civil War unit and how the group got its name during a ceremony held at Mt. Zion Historical Park.

Car show benefits Make-A-Wish

ST. MARYS – An antique and classic car show held Saturday, Sept. 15 will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
The Third Annual Antique Class Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Tractor Supply parking lot located along the Million Dollar Highway in St. Marys.
"This is a new adventure for us," said event co-coordinator Leah Leuschel. "The car show is three years in the making. Our first year was amazing, we had 30 to 40 cars there and we are hoping to double that this year."

Order lifting drilling ban in forest is finalized

A federal judge has finalized his 2009 preliminary order to lift a ban on the drilling of oil and gas wells in the Allegheny National Forest (ANF).
U.S. District Court Judge Sean McLaughlin of Erie on Thursday “converted” his 2009 order into a “final declaratory judgment on the merits.”
In his 2009 order, McLaughlin said “enforcement of the forest-wide drilling ban in the ANF is hereby preliminary enjoined.”

Cancer study urges enrollment, aims to increase prevention

Area residents are encouraged to participate in the American Cancer Society Cancer Prevention Study-3, a nationwide study being conducted in St. Marys on Sept. 11 and 12 at the Sacred Heart Parish Center on Center Street.

Police seize marijuana grow operation in Johnsonburg

JOHNSONBURG BORO - A Johnsonburg man is facing drug charges after authorities, in raiding his home, uncovered what is being called a "sophisticated and substantial" marijuana-growing operation at the residence.
According to affidavits, Troopers with the Pennsylvania State Police Troop C Vice Unit were notified of the existence of a marijuana-growing operation at the 433 Second Ave. home of Edward Joseph Pisani, 54, by a phone call from an unidentified source on Sept. 4.
