Local author chronicles unlikely friendship

St. Marys author John Schlimm recounts the poignant conversations he shared over a five-year period with Sister Augustine in his new memoir "Five Years in Heaven - The Unlikely Friendship That Answered Life’s Greatest Questions."
The heartfelt story tells of second chances as a 31-year-old man lost and alone at a crucial crossroads in his life finds heaven on earth within the confines of St. Joseph Monastery where he meets an 87-year-old wise and humble artist at the convent's ceramic shop.

City awarded Tree City USA title for 10 years

Despite the unseasonably snowy weather, fifth grade students from St. Marys Catholic Elementary School gathered at Benzinger Park for the city's annual Tree City USA ceremony.
David and Tom Grotzinger of West Creek Nursery showed how to plant a tree as students pitched in the process by taking turns shoveling mulch around the tree then compacting it around the tree's base.
This year's tree of choice was a purple prince flowering crab tree and planted in the grassy area behind the parking lot.

Dance company completes regional competition tour

DDCC of April School of Dance ended their regional competition tour at Encore DCS in Johnstown from March 27-29. The company, directed and choreographed by Jennifer and Chelle Blankenship of Kane with dancers from all over Elk County had a successful weekend competing in the competitive level of competition.

Elk County has 4 PA Wilds award winners

KERSEY – On Thursday evening, multiple Elk County businesses, an event and a nature landmark were recognized during the Pennsylvania Wilds Annual Dinner and Awards Banquet.
They are among a small group of business owners, citizens and organizations from across the 12.5 county Pennsylvania Wilds region who were acknowledged for their contributions in sustainable tourism development.

VA medical asset stipulation changed

RIDGWAY – An important change in VA health care may open the door for more veterans to apply for enrollment.
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) currently collects income and net worth (asset) information from veterans who apply for enrollment in VA health care to determine eligibility and/or copay responsibility.
To align VA's health care program with other federal health care programs' financial assessment requirements, earlier this year the VA discontinued the collection of veterans' net worth information for purposes of financial assessment for health benefits.

ECCHS students chosen to take part in lab pilot test

Students in the AP Biology, AP Environmental Science, and Human Anatomy and Physiology classes at Elk County Catholic High School recently had the opportunity to take part in the pilot test of a lab created by Science Take-Out of Pittsford, N.Y. ECC was one of 32 schools selected to participate in the pilot test out of around 700 applicants.
According to Laura Anderson, Science Department Chairperson and the instructor for all three courses, the school found out they were selected in early December and received the material required for the lab at the end of February.

Dowd charged in January 'Suzy's' arson

A Ridgway man is charged with arson in the January fire at 590 South St. Marys St., formerly Suzy's Furniture Store.
A joint investigation by the St. Marys Police, the State Police Fire Marshal and the Crystal Fire Department concluded with the arrest of Colin M. Dowd, 36.

SMAHS seniors to represent DECA Club at international event

St. Marys Area High School senior Deianna Young earned a trip to the DECA international competition after bringing home a top three finish at the organization's 2015 State Career Development Conference recently held in Hershey.
Young received third-place honors in the DECA Quick Serve Restaurant Management portion of the state competition held at the Hershey Lodge from Feb. 24-26.
On Friday, Young will depart for the DECA International Career Development Conference taking place in Orlando, Fla. until April 28.

SMAHS to host indoor championships Saturday

On Saturday, St. Marys Area High School will host 38 different indoor color guard, drumline, dance teams, and majorette groups as part of the Tournament Indoor Association's (TIA) Allegheny Mountain Region Chapter 11 Championships.
"It will be a day of great performances that one doesn't see often here," said Chris Gankosky, SMAHS band director.
