Rick Werneth wins Daily Press summer photo contest

Rick Werneth was the lucky winner of the Daily Press' summer photo contest.D The contest was sponsored by The Daily Press and TKS Computer Solutions in St. Marys. During the month of August, readers were asked to submit their best summer photo on the The Daily Press' Facebook page. There were many great submissions and the winner was chosen by random drawing. Rick will be taking home an HP Deskjet Wireless all-in-one printer, copier, and scanner.

'Blue' moon shines bright in Elk County

Last night's lunar view was known as a "blue moon."
If you saw the moon last night, it looked big and beautiful, but not necessarily blue. Although certain atmospheric conditions can cause a moon to appear blue, it is rare. According to a popular definition, a blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month.
The first full moon last month occurred on Aug. 1.

Milliard arraigned on new charges

RIDGWAY - New charges, including multiple drug offenses and illegal possession of firearms, have been filed against Francis Anthony Milliard, 54, of Ridgway, currently incarcerated on arson and related charges in connection with two residential fires in Elk County, as well as charges of attempted murder and assault stemming from Milliard's alleged beating of a Ridgway man.

Benefit concert for F.I.R.S.T. foundation scheduled for Saturday

WILCOX – Bailey Pretak and friends will present “Release the Butterfly,” a concert to benefit the Foundation for Ichthyosis and Related Skin Types on Saturday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. at the Johnsonburg Area High School Auditorium. 
The concert is free of charge, but a free-will offering will be taken and all proceeds go to the F.I.R.S.T. foundation to fund research and publicity.  This weekend’s concert will feature inspirational music by dancers and singers who will tell a story of those who have Ichthyosis.

The St. Marys Heritage Preservation Group has put a display in the storefront window of the building next to Stewart's Jewelers on South Michael Street. It features photos of laborers of the past, as well as items of the present that have helped make St. Marys the proud, self-sustaining, family-oriented community that it is today.

Son testifies against father in Milliard preliminary hearing

RIDGWAY - The preliminary hearing for Francis Anthony Milliard, 54, of Ridgway, charged in connection with two area arsons as well as the attempted murder of a Ridgway man, resulted in those charges being upheld by District Judge George A. "Tony" King in Elk County Court on Wednesday.

1,000 evacuated after tanker truck crash in Kane

An estimated 1,000 Kane residents were evacuated Wednesday after a tanker truck loaded with butane rolled on its side near Greeves and Fraley streets.
Bruce Manning, director of the McKean County Emergency Management Agency (EMA), said the tanker from the Elkhorn Propane Company of Warren carried 8,400 gallons of "liquid butane under pressure."
He said the evacuation was necessary as a safety precaution before tedious work began to transfer the butane to a Crossett tanker.

Veolia Greentree Landfill sold

RIDGWAY – At Tuesday's Elk County Solid Waste Authority meeting, Veolia Greentree Landfill Manager Don Henrichs said Veolia, the parent company of Veolia Greentree Landfill, was sold to Advanced Disposal, a company that owns interstate waste systems and 20 landfills in the southern United States. Veolia has sold all of its U.S. interests to Advanced Disposal and a shared purchase agreement was signed, so all of the service agreements already in place will remain and Advanced Disposal will assume all Veolia's outstanding shares and operations, which include 28 landfills.

Driver killed in 1-vehicle wreck on Route 6

One person was killed and another was injured in a one-vehicle accident at 5:20 p.m. Wednesday on Route 6, just west of the former Lobo Inn.
Bernice A. Pierson, age 57, of 511 Barden Brook Rd., Eldred, died in the crash. The injured passenger, Meghan C. Pierson, age 24, of the same address, was flown to Hamot Medical Center in Erie with moderate injuries.
