St. Marys artist Peter Winklbauer is showcasing his latest collection of 60 watercolor paintings during a one-man show as part of the Meet the Artist night on Friday, Feb. 4 at the Diamond View Restaurant and Lounge.
The showing will take place from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the former St. Marys Country Club. The event is free and open to the public.
"I believe this is a culmination of my best work." Winklbauer said. "Painting is my life. It's not about selling works, but about creating them."
When a loved one dies, there are many things to consider, not the least of which is a marker to honor his or her final resting place. Susie and Donny "Flip" Bobenrieth, the new owners of St. Marys Monuments, help guide people through the process of choosing a fitting memorial that suits individual tastes and budgets.
"We take care of it from beginning to end," Donny said.
January 24th
2011 marks the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War, and in an effort to acknowledge the occasion, the Mt. Zion Historical Society plans to construct a monument at the Mt. Zion Historical Park to honor the members of the Elk County Rifles, Company G, of the Civil War Bucktail Regiment.
Elk County Council on the Arts is looking for your votes to improve its art gallery in downtown Ridgway, one of the hundreds of projects in the running for a $25,000 grant as part of the nationwide Pepsi Refresh project.
"We will work toward making physical improvements in the gallery. A proper gallery space will help to support our local artists and create a more user-friendly space for the community," explained ECCOTA Executive Director Abbi Peters about the organization's project goal.
Hip-hop artist and St. Marys native Dustin "Dee" Aunkst is hoping to move his career to the next level with his new album, "This Music is My Diary," set for release today.
Aunkst remembers when he first began honing his craft at various venues in and around Elk County, initially recording tracks in his bedroom at his mother's house.
"My favorite thing about St. Marys was the laid-back atmosphere. While I was in high school, it was easy to walk around with a backpack full of CDs to sell. It was a smaller town, so any song I put out created a buzz," Aunkst said.

PENFIELD – Despite temperatures below zero Saturday morning, the Bucktail Council held the Polar Bear Weekend at Camp Mountain Run [CMR] in Penfield.
The event, touted as the largest activity for youth in the Bucktail Council each year, consists of troops staying overnight in tents at CMR; competing in 12 skill and fun events throughout Saturday using the patrol method; and pulling a Klondike sled to all stations with certain scouting equipment on it.
Area residents traveling along Depot Street in recent months have been able to witness the beginning phases of construction of what will soon be a two-floor, 191-stall parking garage.
Construction of the garage, which is expected to help alleviate parking issues in downtown St. Marys, began in September and the city's portion of the project is scheduled to be completed in July.
According to city manager Dave Greene, so far there have not been any major construction delays due to the winter weather, and crews are currently working on the facility's lobby and stair masonry.

Students who will be attending college for the first time this year will benefit from a free upcoming event that offers the use of computers and professional expertise to help them complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). On Wednesday, Feb. 2, the Community Education Council of Elk and Cameron Counties (CEC) will hold application completion sessions in the computer lab at its downtown St. Marys location.
During their Thursday evening meeting the Jay Township Supervisors briefly discussed a variety of township business.
One of the items of old business on the supervisors’ meeting agenda was their Junk Yard Ordinance, which has been in the works for some time. Supervisor Jeremy Rippey explained that he had spoken to township solicitor Tom Coppolo earlier in the week and he had indicated that he was nearly finished reviewing the document and the supervisors could have it back as early as next week.
