Rep. Gabler: Veterans Day an opportunity to think

Rep. Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk) served as the guest speaker at American Legion Post 103's annual Veterans Day banquet on Saturday evening at Bavarian Hills.
After reflecting upon the history of Veterans Day, Gabler remarked that the event served as a time "to stop and reflect on how thankful we all are as a nation for the sacrifices that are made to enable us to live as we do as Americans each and every day."
Gabler noted that he originally tried to come up with something 'unique' or 'profound' for the occasion, but then realize this was not what was needed.

Area PSU students shed light on campus atmosphere

STATE COLLEGE – It's been a tough week for Penn State fans, and an even harder week for the students currently attending PSU's Main Campus in State College. With a national scandal unfolding around their university, these students have faced the challenge of staying focused on their studies while trying to make sense of the events that occurred throughout the week.
Several students from the St. Marys area are currently enrolled at the school, and a few were willing to share their views of what the atmosphere has been like on campus.

Mister Rogers' sweater drive to benefit local families

Donations of new sweaters, hats and mittens are being collected for the Mister Rogers' Neighborhood Sweater Drive taking place in the area from Nov. 16 to Dec. 9.
As part of the event, hosted by Dickinson Center, Inc.'s Children's Prevention Services, numerous donation boxes have been placed throughout St. Marys. Locations include Giant Eagle, Marienstadt Center, Apollo Theatre, Mountain Laurel Federal Credit Union, St. Marys Public Library and the Boys and Girls Club, as well as Dickinson Center at 110 Lincoln St. in Ridgway.

Council seeks new equipment

City Council approved to reject all snow removal bids during their Monday evening worksession. The bids were for work on the parking garage and four city parking lots located on Depot, Brusselles, Market and N. St. Marys streets.
Bids submitted were from Denny Anders Excavating in the amount of $58,600, Krug Contracting totaling $138,200 and Kevin Auman Land Improvement Services totaling $416,000.

Correspondence reviewed at SMASD workshop meeting

At Thursday's workshop of the St. Marys Area School District Board, Superintendent Ann Kearney in written comments congratulated SMAHS students Adair Gennocro, who took third place in the PIAA Cross Country Finals' 5K race; and Liz Dollinger, who was accepted into the U.S. Marine Corps Band. Dollinger will now be headed for basic training at Parris Island, S.C. Kearney said that this marks the first time a St. Marys student has been a part of the band.

Seismic testing may take place on SMASD property

Representatives from Elexco Land Services and EQT Production spoke before the St. Marys Area School District board at Thursday's workshop meeting regarding Elexco's plans to conduct seismic testing on 14.12 acres of school district property encompassing and including the site of the Bennetts Valley Elementary School.

Fr. Jim Faluszczak named ECCSS' Vice President for Catholic Mission

Another piece of the puzzle is finally in place in the Elk County Catholic School System (ECCSS), following an appointment by Bishop Donald Trautman.
Fr. Jim Faluszczak was named the Vice President for Catholic Mission for ECCSS on Wednesday afternoon during a brief meeting held at the Elk County Catholic High School chapel for faculty and staff members of St. Marys Catholic Elementary School, St. Marys Catholic Middle School, and Elk County Catholic High School.

Major Casey emphasizes sense of duty

Major Chris Casey of the U.S. Air Force and an English teacher at St. Marys Area Middle School, spoke to students, fellow teachers and staff on Thursday afternoon as the keynote speaker of the school district's annual Veterans Day Assembly program.
"I recently spoke to the eighth graders about community and how important it is to take care of each other and never give up," Casey said. "Community helped shape me."

School assembly honors area veterans

St. Marys Area High School hosted their annual Veterans Day Assembly program on Thursday afternoon, during which several local veterans were acknowledged for their military service to our country.
The program began with student Scott Barber, who acted as emcee for the event, welcoming all in attendance. The SMAHS Concert Band, under the direction of Chris Gankosky, performed a piece entitled "Regimental Honor." Next, SMAHS Principal Josh Williams offered a brief introduction about the program.
"I encourage all of you students to reach out to a veteran tomorrow," Williams said.

Light Up Night to kick off holiday season

Downtown St. Marys will once again be abuzz the evening of Friday, Nov. 18 during the annual Light Up Night festivities, sponsored by the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce.
The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. on the Diamond with the South St. Marys Street Elementary School Choir performing. The lights are scheduled to be switched on at 7 p.m. in conjunction with the arrival of Santa Claus, who will be arriving via a different method than in past years.
