As the first rays of light break over the hills and the ground is wet with dew, the voices of area residents will be raised in song and prayer at a sunrise service on Easter Sunday.
The service will take place at 6:30 a.m. on Easter Sunday, April 8, at the Diamond in downtown St. Marys. The Rev. Chris Kindle, pastor of First United Methodist Church in St. Marys, said multiple churches will be participating in the event.
Monday evening, St. Marys City Council approved several items ranging from parking updates to CDBG applications to new protocol for police promotions.
Council unanimously approved a resolution establishing the procedures for promotion within the City of St. Marys Police Department.
Greene said the resolution was reviewed by City Solicitor Tom Wagner as well as the Civil Service Commission.
St. Marys Pharmacy/Home Medical has pledged to be a $1,000 sponsor for the 2012 Relay for Life of Elk County.
"With help from team members, employees of St. Marys Pharmacy/Home Medical, and all the wonderful donations from the community, Team SMP was able to raise over $6,000 last year," said Team Captain Rebecca Schatz.
The 2012 Relay for Life of Elk County will take place on June 8-9 at the Fox Township Community Park beginning at noon on Friday and concluding at noon on Saturday.
At the 4th Annual Heritage Gala on Friday evening, the Benedictine Sisters of St. Joseph Monastery were presented with the Heritage Award for the many roles they have played in seeing to the spiritual, educational and other needs of the St. Marys community.
On Friday evening at The Red Fern in Fox Twp., the Benedictine Sisters of St. Joseph Monastery were honored with the Heritage Award from the Elk County Catholic School System for their many contributions to the community over the years.
The Heritage Award is given annually to individuals, living or deceased, who have made a significant impact on Catholic education in St. Marys. At the Heritage Gala Friday evening, guests were treated to a slide show that told of the history of the sisters and their many contributions over the years.
Women, Infants and Children (WIC), a program offered through the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission, continues to thrive.
"Our breastfeeding education component of WIC continues to strengthen," said Julie Kasmierski, WIC director. "Our breastfeeding peer counseling contacts are at an all-time high. During the month of January, our breastfeeding peer counselors had 284 contacts with pregnant and/or breastfeeding mothers."
The figure climbed to 323 contacts in February.
In an emotional production of "The Living Stations," students from St. Marys Catholic and St. Marys Area middle schools have joined together in portraying Jesus' final hours with both respect and accuracy.
"Working on such a moving play together has been a terrific experience for all," said Faith Formation Program Facilitator Vanessa Weis. "The production is as moving for the students as it is for the people watching it. Being a part of this reenactment helps to strengthen their appreciation for the sacrifice Jesus made for our sins long ago."
ST. MARYS â€“ Parent company THR & Associates is bringing the International Coin Collectors Association to St. Marys in order to purchase coins, paper currency, gold and silver from area residents for their global network of collectors, dealers and refineries.
The free event is open to the public and will be held at the Comfort Inn, 195 Comfort Lane, St. Marys, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, April 2 through Friday, April 6.
It became a busy afternoon in a short time for the Crystal Fire Department, which responded to back-to-back calls less than 10 minutes apart on Wednesday afternoon.
The first call came in at 4:39 p.m. for a brush fire above P/M National at 201 Grotzinger Rd., off of Rosely Road. Upon arrival, firefighters found a fairly large area of grassland on fire.
Federal road funding is set to expire this weekend and the monetary halt has caused considerable unrest amongst area planners.
