Police seize marijuana grow operation in Johnsonburg

JOHNSONBURG BORO - A Johnsonburg man is facing drug charges after authorities, in raiding his home, uncovered what is being called a "sophisticated and substantial" marijuana-growing operation at the residence.
According to affidavits, Troopers with the Pennsylvania State Police Troop C Vice Unit were notified of the existence of a marijuana-growing operation at the 433 Second Ave. home of Edward Joseph Pisani, 54, by a phone call from an unidentified source on Sept. 4.

Cancer study urges enrollment, aims to increase prevention

Area residents are encouraged to participate in the American Cancer Society Cancer Prevention Study-3, a nationwide study being conducted in St. Marys on Sept. 11 and 12 at the Sacred Heart Parish Center on Center Street.

SMASD appeal on warning status denied

ST. MARYS - During the workshop meeting of the St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors on Thursday, board members discussed the district filing an appeal with the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) following receipt of a warning status due to the graduation rate for economically disadvantaged students. The previous appeal was denied.

Local tax preparer charged with theft

ST. MARYS - Criminal charges have been filed against the Elk County Humane Society's former treasurer and financial advisor, Richard Allan Danz, 47, of 376 Walnut St., St. Marys, in connection with the alleged theft of funds through his position with the organization, as well as charges alleging he defrauded clients of investments made through his private tax preparation business.

Elk viewing season in Elk and Cameron counties

CAMERON COUNTY - On this cool and damp evening just before dark, the elk are just screaming out in the field. These bulls are bugling to establish dominance and attract cows (females). You can hear other elk bugling in the woods nearby, too. As it gets dark, the sounds seem to magnify. It is the rut for these large, majestic animals. Here in Cameron County, at the Hicks Run Wildlife Viewing Area, Bureau of Forestry, employees are available most Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons and evenings to share their knowledge of elk and other wildlife.

Community building rules discussed

Fox Township Supervisors discussed changes to the draft of the Community Building rental agreement rules during their recent meeting.
Supervisor Randy Gradizzi questioned several statements. One rule stated the "community building shall not be available for use by for-profit groups, businesses or individuals." He said this affects the Zumba and karate classes because there is a charge for those classes.

Elder Milliard waives preliminary hearing for new charges

JOHNSONBURG - Francis Anthony Milliard, 54, of Ridgway, currently incarcerated on arson and arson-related charges for his alleged role in setting two Elk County house fires, as well as charges of attempted murder and assault stemming from the beating of a Ridgway man, was in District Court in Johnsonburg Wednesday where he waived his preliminary hearing on new charges of felony firearm possession and violations of the Controlled Substance, Drug, Device, and Cosmetics Act (CSDDCA).

Fire dept. requests township assistance for building repairs

At Wednesday's meeting of the Fox Twp. Supervisors, Bob Gradizzi of the Fox Township Volunteer Fire Department was in attendance with several members of the fire company to inquire if any township money had been set aside to fund building maintenance for the fire hall.
Gradizzi explained the building needs a new furnace and is aiming to have a new one installed before winter.
"We're having a lot of issues with the building," Gradizzi said. "We need to get some work done on the building, definitely before winter as far as heat goes."

Vietnam veterans honored in Wednesday morning ceremony

DuBOIS – State Rep. Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk) and Congressman Glenn "GT" Thompson (R-5) were among the individuals who attended a special ceremony on Wednesday morning at VFW Post 813 in DuBois to pause to honor area veterans who served during the Vietnam War.
The salute to the veterans was hosted by Gabler, who acknowledged that for many of the 126 veterans in attendance at the ceremony, their "return home was not as it should have been."

Boys and Girls Club wants to offer new activities

The St. Marys Boys and Girls Club offers many activities for children and adults, and is looking to expand that range and acquire more volunteers to better serve area residents.
The venerable organization, which was established in 1923 by businessman and philanthropist William E. Hall, was essentially the first of its kind to be placed in a rural setting like St. Marys. St. Marys Girls and Boys Club Executive Director Tiffany Boschert began her new position on July 16. She said the club is a great place for area residents to be enriched and have fun.
