SMASD board meeting to approve personnel

October 11, 2011

At the recent meeting of the St. Marys Area Board of School Directors, the board approved several new personnel items.
All employment recommendations are provisional for 30 days pending receipt of Act 151 and Act 34 clearance documentation.
Support personnel resignations were accepted for Ann Fledderman, of St. Marys, as cafeteria monitor, and Michelle Holsopple, of Wilcox, as classroom aide.

Opening remarks in Donachy murder trial

The homicide trial of Lawrence Earl Donachy, 36, of St. Marys, began Monday morning as a 15-member jury heard opening remarks and testimony from four witnesses was heard.

Among the first group of witnesses to take the stand Monday on the opening day of the homicide trial of Lawrence Earl Donachy were Kelly Bauer of St. Marys, the daughter of murder victim Irene Challingsworth; Judith Wendel of St. Marys, a long-time client of Challingsworth; Diane Scutella of St. Marys, a former employee of Consolidated News Agency in 1999; Bill Brem of Tampa, Fla., a retired St. Marys City Police officer; and Cpl. Jeffrey Kunselman of the Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police's Forensic Services Unit.

Seismic testing on district property discussed at school board meeting

At Monday's meeting of the St. Marys Area School District's Board of Directors, area residents questioned board members about information contained in a Daily Press article covering last Thursday's work session meeting of the board. At that meeting, SMASD Superintendent Anne Kearney said she had been approached by ELEXCO Land Services Company, with the company requesting permission to conduct seismic testing on the district's property at the Bennetts Valley Elementary School.

Club's 2011 Fall Ride for breast cancer awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the T-Bones Off Road Club has dedicated its 2011 Fall Ride to promote awareness.
" Let’s face it, we’ve all known someone, whether it be family, friend or relative, that has been touched by this disease," said Kellie Mocik, one of the event organizers. "Some of us have lost loved ones to breast cancer while others know a survivor or someone who is battling this horrible disease today."

Burial detail to honor area veterans with monuments

The members of the St. Marys Servicemen's Burial Detail are a familiar sight to anyone who has attended the funeral of an area veteran. Veterans themselves, they are a moving sight as they salute, present the flag and perform other rituals as a sign of respect and an appropriate farewell to someone who has served in a branch of the U.S. military. To further honor deceased veterans, the burial detail is planning to erect monuments at both the St. Mary's Catholic and St. Marys Protestant cemeteries.

School board considers seismic testing on school property

At Thursday's work session meeting of the St. Marys Area School District's board of directors, Superintendent Anne Kearney discussed with other board members a proposal to allow ELEXCO Land Service Company to perform seismic testing on district property in Bennetts Valley.
"On Wednesday, I was approached by Elexco Land Services Company, asking if we could give permission for them to do seismic testing on the property at Bennetts Valley [school]," Kearney said.

Outfitter store opens for business

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Friday afternoon at Country Squirrel Outfitters at 3 Main St. in downtown Ridgway.
Owners Steve and Miranda Putt grew up in Bedford County and later moved to Colorado where they owned and operated a similar outfitter store; they ultimately moved back to Pennsylvania to be closer to family and friends.

PSSA test results discussed at school board meeting

At Monday's workshop meeting of the St. Marys Area School District's board of directors, the 2010-2011 PSSA (Pennsylvania System of School Assessments) results were discussed and, in looking forward, means of ensuring continued success and future improvements were considered.
Joseph Collins, SMASD director of curriculum, instruction, and assessment, presented the results to the board and assembled administrators. He said 75 percent of students in the St. Marys Area School District (SMASD) were shown to be proficient or advanced in reading and 84 percent in math.

Humane Society celebrates 'Adopt a Shelter Dog Month'

October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and in celebration of the occasion, the Elk County Humane Society is inviting prospective pet owners to visit them this month and consider what an adopted dog could bring to their lives.
In addition, from Oct. 10 through 29, the Humane Society will be lowering the adoption fees for dogs who have been with the shelter for six months or longer, to increase the chances of their finding a home.
